Zakaria Sajir is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Communication at the University of Salamanca and a member of the research group “Labour Market, Migration and Health” (M2S). He is also affiliated with the University Institute for the Sciences of Religions (IUCR) and the Analysis Group on Islam and Arab-Islamic Cultures in Transnational Contexts (GRAIS) at the Complutense University of Madrid. He holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Leicester (2018) and previously held a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Economics, Geography and Demography (IEGD-CSIC) in Madrid (2021–2023). His research focuses on contemporary migration mobilities, labour exploitation, structural discrimination, Islamophobia, the securitisation of new minorities, and the governance of religious and ethnic diversity in Europe. He has published in leading journals such as the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Critical Social Policy, International Journal of Communication, Religions, Italian Sociological Review and Revista Internacional de Sociología, among others. He is co-editor, with Rafael Ruiz Andrés, and author of several chapters in the volume Religious Diversity in Post-Secular Societies: Conceptual Foundations, Public Management and Upcoming Prospects (Springer, 2025). Sajir has participated in competitively funded projects supported by the British Academy, the ESRC, the Ford Foundation, International Media Support, the KAICIID Dialogue Centre and national research agencies. He is currently a member of the research teams of CULTIHAB (PID2024-158550NA-I00) and RECHANGE (PID2024-160251NB-C21), both 2025–2029 Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation. Within the COST Action ETHMIGSURVEYDATA, he contributed from 2016 to 2021 to the creation of the Ethnic and Migrant Minorities Survey Registry, which received the Open Science – Open Data award from the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research in 2022. Since 2024, he has served as secretary of the Sociology of Religion Research Committee (CI 16) of the Spanish Federation of Sociology (Federación Española de Sociología, FES) and is active in academic and policy networks on migration, religion and inequality. His work combines mixed-method survey analysis with qualitative and multilingual fieldwork in Arabic, Italian, French, Spanish and English.
