Tuncer

I am currently an associate professor in the Department of Architecture at Kadir Has University and a visiting scholar at the University of Washington during my sabbatical year. Trained in and holding a PhD in Architecture and Urban Studies, my research lies at the intersection of urban space, power, migration, and everyday spatial tactics. My doctoral research introduced an ethno-spatial methodology that combines ethnographic inquiry with spatial analysis, laying the foundation for an interdisciplinary research agenda bridging architectural theory and political sociology. Throughout my career, I have examined how space is produced, inhabited, and contested within structural inequality. While my early work focused on internally displaced Kurds, border regions, and power hierarchies in Turkey, my subsequent research has expanded to include labor and skilled migration, practices of everyday life, urban precarity, and the fragility of the middle class in global cities. As a co-investigator at the UKRI GCRF Centre for Gender, Justice, and Security at the London School of Economics, I coordinated multi-regional fieldwork in Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, and Pakistan, contributing a spatial and urban perspective to research on the gendered dynamics of international labor migration. Additionally, I was the principal investigator of a TÜBİTAK 1001-funded project on skilled migrants in Istanbul, and am currently leading a TÜBİTAK 2219-supported research project at the University of Washington on skilled migrants from the Near and Middle East in the greater Seattle area, both of which are situated within the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities.
