Akbaş Demirel got her bachelor's degree in the Department of International Relations at Ankara University’s Faculty of Political Sciences. She obtained her master’s and doctoral degrees from the Department of International Relations at Ege University, where she worked as a research assistant between 2011 and 2017. During her master’s studies she carried out research at the University of Oxford’s Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS). Her doctoral thesis is titled “Civil Society Actors Working in the Field of Migration and Asylum in Turkey: A Network Approach”. Between 2017 and 2021 she worked at the HRFT Academy, established within the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT), and she has been a visiting researcher at the University of Neuchâtel. She has conducted field research on refugees in Turkey, migration and human rights, refugees’ access to rights, and the role of civil society, and has published work in this field. She currently works as a research assistant (PhD) in the Department of International Relations at Ege University. She is the chair of the board of Association for Solidarity with Refugees (Mülteci-Der), in İzmir, Turkey.
