Dr Besim Can ZIRH is an Assistant Professor of Social Anthropology in the Sociology Department at the Middle East Technical University. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and his Master of Science in Political Science from the same institution in 2002 and 2005, respectively. He was subsequently awarded a PhD in Social Anthropology from University College London in 2012. His doctoral research focused on the transnational social spaces created by Alevi immigrants through funerary activities between Europe and Turkey. During his sabbatical year in 2021–22, Dr ZIRH conducted research into the right to vote in external elections and policies relating to the creation of diaspora communities in the context of Turkey and its migrant citizens in Germany. This research was conducted in collaboration with the Sociology Department at Bielefeld University. Dr ZIRH is a founding member of the Association for Migration Research (GAR - Türkiye), established in 2017.
