Gola-Boutros

Marcela Gola-Boutros is an ESRC-funded doctoral researcher in the Centre for International Education (CIE), University of Sussex. Through a decolonial lens, her doctoral research explores the lived experiences of forcibly displaced people in higher education in Brasil, focusing on the individual and contextual circumstances that enable these students to access and thrive in the Brazilian academic environment. She is interested in comprehending the role of universities in the context of displacement, and how they can better support students of refugee backgrounds. During her PhD studies, Marcela gained valuable experience through a placement with UNHCR Brasil, where she supported the Sergio Vieira de Mello Academic Chair. Additionally, her research experience includes contributing to the evaluation of the UK Schools of Sanctuary programme. Marcela is currently applying her skills as a Research Assistant, supporting the collaborative efforts between Mahidol and Sussex universities on education and the complexities of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
