I am Sociologist and the Assistant Dean of the Macricostas School of Arts and Sciences at Western Connecticut State University. I am also a Part-Time Assistant Professor and an Affiliated Faculty at the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility at the New School. Prior to my academic career, I worked for years with refugees and immigrants in Atlanta, GA. I earned by PhD in Sociology from The Graduate Center, The City University of New York. My research focuses on the intersection of immigration, race, and gender and analyzes how seemingly racially-neutral refugee and immigration policies indeed are inherently racist. My forthcoming book Unwelcome Shores: Black Refugees in America (Rutgers University Press) sheds light on the racialization of Black refugees and the anti-Black racism they have experienced at every step of their migration journey. By privileging race as the lens of analysis, I reveal the significance of race in the lives of Liberians prior to, and after their immigration to the U.S.—from the foundation of Liberia as a quasi U.S. colony for free(d) Black people, to the selection process for refugee resettlement, and finally to Liberian refugees’ incorporation into American society. The book also includes policy recommendations for policymakers and international refugee organizations, aimed at addressing and combating systemic anti-Black racism and other forms of discrimination within the immigration system and resettlement programs. This work complements my previous publications in African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal, International Migration, and International Journal of Migration, Health and Social Care and chapters in edited books. I serve as s country conditions expert for asylum and deportation cases for Liberian nationals. My other research investigates the significance and meaning of community-based learning opportunities for students. I am working on a co-edited book titled How to Facilitate Community-Based Learning (under contract with Edward Elgar Publishing.)
