Nationhood refers to the status of belonging to a nation(-state) or to a national identity. Nationalism in turn can be defined as a set of beliefs and symbols expressing an identification with a given national community and efforts aimed at the establishment and/or maintenance of a sovereign nation-state. Migrants may encounter or express nationalism and manifestations of nationhood in the society of settlement. At the same time, migrants can also engage in forms of nationalism and manifestations of nationhood of both the host country and the sending country.
