Sen Mookerjee
I am a sociologist of migration, boundaries and belonging, with a growing focus on environmental and climate-related mobility. My doctoral research at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Geneva, examined citizenship formation in the former border enclaves (chhitmahals) of India and Bangladesh — how people negotiate belonging when a border moves around them. I have since published on the political economy of migration in the India–Bangladesh borderlands (Indian Journal of Labour Economics), on internal migrants and embodied citizenship during India's Covid-19 lockdown (Citizenship Studies), and on circular labour migration and gendered belonging among women in the Indian Sundarbans (South Asia Migration Report 2024, Routledge). My current work, as Senior Fellow and Programme Director at the Institute for Human Development, New Delhi, concerns migration and adaptation to environmental change and climate risk in the Ganga river basin, with particular attention to gender and marginalised groups. Before returning to academia, I worked for a decade in development practice in South Asia, most substantially as Regional Programme Officer for UNIFEM (now UN Women)'s regional anti-trafficking programme, engaging governments, SAARC and civil society across eight countries. I work qualitatively with ethnography, life histories, focus groups and mixed-methods survey research.
