Dr. Oroub El-Abed is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Birzeit University, where she teaches in the International Migration and Refugee Studies Program. She is also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Centre for Conflict and Humanitarian Studies in Doha. She holds a PhD in the Political Economy of Development Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, with a specialization in Forced Migration. Her research focuses on refugees and vulnerable minorities in the Middle East, with a particular emphasis on livelihoods, governance frameworks, and the intersection of displacement with socioeconomic marginalization. Dr. El-Abed has collaborated with policymakers and practitioners through roles at the United Nations/World Food Programme and the World Bank, with notable contributions on Iraq. As an academic, she has taught courses on development, livelihoods, forced migration, and Palestinian refugee issues, while leading numerous research projects across the Middle East that examine the challenges facing both displaced populations and host communities. She has published widely on development—particularly education, employment, and refugee livelihoods—including studies on Palestinian refugees in Egypt and on the socioeconomic struggles of ex-Gaza refugees in Jordan. Her scholarship also explores the governance frameworks of host states managing Syrian and Iraqi displacement. Dr. El-Abed is the author of Palestinians in Egypt: Analysis of Livelihoods, Exclusion, and Coping Strategies. Her forthcoming publication, based on her doctoral thesis, investigates the dual status of Jordanians of Palestinian origin in East Amman and how the state governors its people . She is also preparing a new manuscript that critically examines the limited options available to refugees in Arab countries and challenges the viability of the so-called “durable solutions.”
