Maxime Felder is a sociologist working at the intersection of urban sociology, migration studies, and the sociology of social relations and networks. His research focuses on understanding how newly arrived, low-resource migrants navigate life in expensive and highly regulated Western European cities. Adopting a relational approach, he explores the ambiguous role of 'arrival infrastructures', investigating how newcomers compose a milieu that allows them not only to meet their basic needs but also to pursue more or less coherent life plans. A central concern in his work is the issue of housing. He analyzes 'subaltern housing policies': the ways in which Western European societies have historically addressed (or failed to address) the housing needs of low-skilled migrant workers. Another key focus is on practices of hospitality and reciprocity within migrant networks. Seeking to move beyond the binary of positive versus negative social capital, he examines how relationships between vulnerable newcomers and the more established migrants hosting them can be both supportive and exploitative.
