Abay is applied sociologist and social development researcher bridging academic inquiry with complex, field-level execution. My career began at Dilla University as a Graduate Assistant Lecturer immediately after completing my BA in Sociology at Madda Walabu University. While teaching, I also earned a Higher Diploma Program (HDP) certificate in pedagogy. Seeking deeper expertise, I pursued my MA at Addis Ababa University before transitioning to the field as a Social Development Specialist with the Ethiopian Roads Administration. In this role, I coordinated social safeguards, grievance redress, and protection frameworks for massive infrastructure projects funded by global donors, including the World Bank, AfDB, and Exim Banks. I worked closely with everyone from local communities to higher government officials to ensure Project-Affected Persons (PAPs) were empowered and fairly treated. Collaborating alongside engineers, environmental and Climate Change officers, occupational safety officers, and economists, I reviewed critical project documents (RAP, LRP, SIA, SMP) and ensured strict compliance with national and international policies. Participating in different stages of the project life cycle—from initial design to final handover—alongside distinguished practitioners taught me exactly where and how to align sociological perspectives with complex, multidisciplinary projects. This experience deeply reshaped my understanding of how sociological theories translate into tangible, life-changing practices. Today, I bring that rich field experience back into academia as a lecturer at Haramaya University, while continuing to collaborate on freelance research and development initiatives. I am passionate about using participatory research to build community resilience and drive inclusive social development. Seeking to deepen my impact, I later attended Jimma University for MA, where I delved deep into community-centered policy research.
