In 2015 over one million people crossed the Mediterranean to Europe in search of safety and a better life. Thousands died along the way. The MEDMIG project sought to better understand these unprecedented movements in the region by examining the journeys, motivations and aspirations of people in Italy, Greece, Malta and Turkey.
As the largest systematic, in-depth analysis of the experiences of their journeys across the Mediterranean, our research casts new light on the ‘migration crisis’ and challenges the public, politicians, policy makers and the media to rethink their understanding of why and how people move.
