Maryam Karimi is an assistant professor at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU), Politecnico di Milano. She holds a PhD in Urban Planning, Policy, and Design and has developed a multidisciplinary research background through experiences in different parts of the world. Her work focuses on the intersections of migration studies and people-centred smart cities guided by local knowledge production, co-design and co-creation approaches with local communities as well as EU institutions, and with a strong emphasis on the practical application of rights in the discourse of the right to the city. In particular, she is interested in how “smartness” can support the inclusion of vulnerable populations by improving the quality and accessibility of public services and shaping cities that respond to the real needs and rights of all residents. In her recent role as a coordination team member and scientific researcher for the EU-funded project easyRights and the co-coordinator of the Polisocial Award project città-IN, Maryam engages in migration studies and explores the role of technologies, organizational learning, and transformation in the public sector. She has published in international journals and participated in organizing and moderating conferences on service accessibility and migrant integration through ICT solutions. Prior to her PhD, she earned an MSc in Design from the University of Massachusetts and an MSc in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Colorado Denver.
