Urszula Markowska-Manista, PhD habil. (DSc Eng.) with honors, is a field researcher and PhD professor at the Faculty of Education, University of Warsaw, where she also heads the Interdisciplinary Research Center for Intercultural Education and Communication. She is a member of the Advisory Team on Participation of Children and Youth at the Polish Ombudsperson for Children (2024–2027), member of The Scientific Board in Education, UW. Additionally, she is a guest professor at the University of Applied Sciences in Darmstadt, Germany (2023/2024). She served as director of the MA Childhood Studies and Children's Rights program at the Free University Berlin (2016) and co-director at the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (2017–2021). Previously, she was Assistant Professor and Chairperson of the UNESCO/Janusz Korczak Chair in Interdisciplinary Studies on Child Development and Well-being at the M. Grzegorzewska Pedagogical University (until 2018) and member of the Committee for Young Scientists at the Polish Academy of Sciences (2020–2024).
Her research and teaching focus on education in fragile, culturally diverse contexts, childhood and youth studies, children’s rights, participatory and decolonial oriented methodologies, teachers’ education, ethnography, migration and schooling, social inequality in education, and ethical research with children and youth. Over the past two decades, she has conducted extensive community-oriented fieldwork in Central Africa, the Horn of Africa, the South Caucasus, and Central Europe, applying postcolonial and decolonial perspectives to childhood and youth studies and education.
Markowska-Manista is Regional Editor for Poland at Bloomsbury Education and Childhood Studies and author and co-author of several thematic publications, including Childhood Studies and Children’s Rights Between Research and Activism (with Budde, 2020, Springer), Theorien und Praktiken der Selbstbestimmung und Partizipation: Janusz Korczak im Diskurs (with Maier-Höfer & Stellakis, 2023, Springer), Childhoods of the Global South: Children's Rights and Resistance (Liebel with Budde, Meade, 2023, Policy Press), and Non-Inclusive Education in Central and Eastern Europe (with Górak-Sosnowska, 2022, Bloomsbury). In 2025, she received the prestigious Janusz Korczak Award for her outstanding contributions to children’s rights scholarship.
