Refugee Resettlement: The view from Kenya. Findings from field research in Nairobi and Kakuma refugee camp

Authors Hannah ELLIOTT
Description
This report presents the findings of field research in Kenya under the KNOW RESET project, which maps and analyses legal and policy frameworks as well as practices related to resettlement to European countries. The research in Kenya was a component of this broader project, which included research in 27 EU member states and three countries of first asylum: Kenya, Pakistan and Tunisia. Research was carried out in Nairobi and Kakuma refugee camp between June and October 2012 and involved interviews with refugee and resettlement actors, including those participating in resettlement to European countries. The report broadly explores and presents Kenya’s resettlement landscape, the positions, roles and practices of European resettlement countries within that landscape, and the perspectives and experiences of refugees around resettlement.

The compilation of a second generation ‘web-based’ ornithological atlas for Kenya

Description
Kenya’s avifauna is one of the better studied in Africa, second probably only to South Africa. Despite this, and whilst there are many bird watchers active in Kenya and thousands of tourists visit Kenya specifically for ornithological safaris, we still know very little about changes that have occurred in species’ distribution and status over the past 25-50 years. Range extensions and contractions have been noted but only from ad hoc observations. While records of birds found in Kenya are very much up to date, a real gap exists in our understanding of avian distributions and the contribution of changing global climate on observed species distribution patterns. Over a timeline of 2 years based at the Natural History Museum of Denmark, during which the applicant will initiate the project and receive thorough training in the techniques required to achieve the project, followed by a third year return to the National Museums of Kenya, where the applicant will transfer these techniques to local parties who will be vital to the continual expansion of the project, this proposed project will provide the applicant with the required training to enable him to take community based observational data, and use it in order to deliver a demand driven, continually evolving web-based bird atlas for Kenya. In addition to mapping the current avian diversity, the atlas will contain climate-based species niche modelling and genetic data, in order to provide a comprehensive view of the avifauna and its future prospects. This will consolidate the position of the host institute as one of the most innovative Natural History Museums in the world, in particular with regards to moving away from standard ‘collecting’ to innovative new ways of bringing natural history to the public.

East Africa Migration Route Initiative. Gaps&Needs Analysis Project Country Report Libya, Ethiopia, Kenya

Authors International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD)
Description
As part of the East Africa Migration Route Initiative (EAMRI), the United Kingdom Home Office, with the support of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, had tasked the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) to implement the East Africa Migration Route Gaps and Needs Analysis project, to establish a clearer picture of migration flows and trends as well as migration management capacities and frameworks in place in East Africa. The project consisted of two phases: a desk research phase, concluded with the “East Africa Migration Route Report”, and a field research phase to validate and complete the findings of the preceding desk analysis. The “East Africa Migration Route Report” had recommended focussing the field research on three countries placed along the East Africa migration route – Ethiopia, Kenya and Libya - stating that they merited “further attention in the EU’s effort to understand migration flows in East Africa.”1 The report at hand is the result of the field research missions to Ethiopia, Kenya and Libya, which took place between December 2007 and February 2008. During the missions a broad range of stakeholders were consulted on the migration flows to/through/from, and migration trends in, Ethiopia, Kenya and Libya. Migration management capacities and needs of relevant authorities were also assessed.
