I work at the intersection of cross-cultural community engagement, research and policymaking, using collaborative and multidisciplinary approaches to support health and wellbeing.
For over 30 years I've worked to improve health services for migrant, refugee and other culturally diverse populations, specialising in policy development and programme implementation. With WHO and the International Organization for Migration, I was facilitator and rapporteur for the first two global consultations on migrant health. As the founder and Director of DiversityRx, I led the development of several key policy tools, including the U.S. Standards for Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) in Health Care, and an accompanying research agenda for the US Department of Health and Human Services. I've also conducted research on foreigners’ access to health services while living in Japan.
In the emerging field of creative health, I collaborate with artists, community organisations and academic partners that use the arts for public health impact. I take a participatory approach, using peer-based learning, reflective practices and coproduction to support programme design, evaluation and research. Working with Arts Council England, The Culture Health and Wellbeing Alliance, the University of Bristol and others, my recent projects include supporting the wellbeing of young people and refugees through creative activities and developing a guide for artists working in humanitarian settings. I especially enjoy using and teaching arts-based and creative methods in facilitation, evaluation and research. I'm also on the editorial board of the Journal of Creative Research Methods
At the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, where I received a Doctor of Public Health degree, I conducted participatory action research using qualitative methods on arts, health and wellbeing and studied cross-sectoral collaboration to implement arts-based interventions and social prescribing. My doctoral research looked at the experiences, skills and training of artists supporting wellbeing for people with complex conditions.
