Mulama
Anne Stella Mulama is a Kenyan PhD candidate based in Uganda at Makerere University’s Institute of Gender and Development Studies. Her doctoral research - 2024 to 2028, is titled “Intersectional Labour Migration Experiences of Kenyan Women Domestic Workers from Arab Countries: Focus on Return and Reintegration.” The study examines how gender, class, age, care responsibilities, socio-economic location and migration status shape the experiences of Kenyan women domestic workers before migration, during employment in Arab countries, and after return to Kenya.
Anne holds an MSc in Social Studies of Gender from Lund University, Sweden (2019–2021), and an MA in Development Studies from the International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands (2007–2008). She also completed an exchange term at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, focusing on project management and global migration.
Her areas of experience include gender and migration, labour migration governance, return and reintegration, women migrant domestic work, care work, women’s economic empowerment, mixed-methods research, monitoring and evaluation, and gender-responsive policy analysis. Her professional work has involved Kenya and regional policy spaces connected to Uganda and Ethiopia. Her PhD contributes to debates on gender, migration, decent work, reintegration and social protection in Africa.
