Richter

Lena Richter is a multilingual researcher with a background in Anthropology and Migration Studies and a regional specialisation in the Maghreb. Since 2016, she has conducted extensive qualitative research on the question of nonreligion in Morocco, Tunisia, and the Moroccan diaspora in Europe. She obtained her PhD in religious studies at Radboud University in the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie ITN project “Mediating Islam in the Digital Age”, focusing on nonreligious activism in Morocco and the Moroccan diaspora. After her PhD, Lena has worked as an MSCA YUFE4 postdoctoral researcher at the University of Antwerp, as part of the MIGLOBA (Migration and Global Mobility) research network. Since autumn 2025, she has been working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Migration and Societal Change at Eurac Research in Bozen/Bolzano. Among others, she is involved in quantitative research on perceptions of migration in South Tyrol and continues her own research on nonreligious asylum claims. She has published widely on the topic of nonreligion, and her forthcoming book offers an in-depth ethnographic study of how nonreligious Moroccans navigate their predominantly religious environment by embracing different strategies. In addition to her research, Lena has taught in Morocco and the Netherlands on topics such as qualitative methods, citizenship, transnationalism, and migration.
