He has been a researcher at the Center for Urban Studies and the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES) of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) in the University of Amsterdam

He was holder of the Prof. J.A.A. van Doorn Chair in the Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), a Research Fellow at the Migration Research Center (MiReKoc) at Koç University, Istanbul, an Associate of the World Economic Forum, a Member of the Advisory Board of the Centre on Migration, Policy, and Society (COMPAS) within the University of Oxford, and an Advisor of a wide array of local, national and supranational governmental organizations and civic society institutions, including the European Commission (notably DG Enterprise and Industry), the OECD, the OSCE, and the United Nations (notably the IOM, UNHCR, UNCTAD, and the Population Division).
He continues working on cities and migration, and keeps working as a member of the BROAD-ER consortium in which the University of Amsterdam is collaborating with the Migration Research Center (MiReKoc) at Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey, and the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Immigration (GRITIM) at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Catalonia.
Next to that, he stays on as a managing editor of the International Migration journal, and as a Chair of Metropolis International.
