Erick is a DPhil candidate in Migration Studies at the University of Oxford. His research explores how public and political discourses around time and space consolidate social categories and boundaries that shape the lived experiences of (would-be) migrants. His work lies at the intersection of migration studies, human geography, and social theory. His current research examines how migration containment – understood as a mode of restricting mobilities – is co-produced by state actors and migrant communities. The importance of this research lies in the fact that it unsettles traditional assumptions in Migration Studies and policy that containment is only implemented by states and their agencies and actors. Pushed by racial, legal, and economic violence, immigrants may end up sanctioning the same containment apparatus they fear, echoing official anti-migrant rhetoric through lobbying, electoral support, and public discourse. The research offers an innovative perspective on the legal and social dimensions of mobility governance in the United States by demonstrating with firsthand data that collaboration with immigration agencies does not shield immigrants from America’s bordering practices or from the social hierarchies that sustain them.
