Age-related migration consequences

Migration is a life-changing process at any age in the life course, but it can have a different impact at different ages. This topic refers to the consequences of migration at different ages. Adaptation in the host society happens differently for children, young adults, adults of working age, or elderly migrants. This could  , relate to experiences of loneliness or social network formation, among others.

Literature listed under this topic include studies on physical and psychological well-being among elderly immigrants, immigrants in pension systems, impact of (internal) migration on left-behind parents, ageing migrants and the question of return, and the impact of migration in the childhood on youth development.

interlinked migration chains and their consequences to work and care in Ageing Europe

Principal investigator Anna Gavanas (REMESO Project Leader), Ines Calzada (Participants not from REMESO)
Description
Swedish retirees are part of a growing stream of Northern Europeans who migrate to Southern Europe to retire in the sun. Swedish retirement migrants to Spain and migrant workers: interlinked migration chains and their consequences to work and care in Ageing Europe

Principal investigator Anna Gavanas (REMESO Project Leader), Dr Ines Calzada (Participants not from REMESO)
Description
In Swedish public discourse, retirees born in the 1940s are considered a growing cohort of relatively wealthy consumers, with more cosmopolitan preferences and habits, and different demands compared to previous generations. Swedish retirees are part of a growing stream of Northern Europeans who migrate to Southern Europe to retire in the sun. Exploring the relations between streams of migrants who meet in Spain, and their intermediaries, this project explores issues of mobility and the globalization of care/service, of crucial importance to welfare states and the future of work, elderly care and retirement conditions in Ageing Europe.

Principal investigator Michael Schnegg (Principal Investigator), Julia Pauli (Principal Investigator)
Description

Principal investigator Kira Kosnick (Principal Investigator)
Description

Long-Run Economic Perspectives of an Ageing Society

Description
This project integrates into modern dynamic macroeconomics a biologically founded process of individual ageing, i.e. ageing understood as the gradual deterioration of the functioning of body and mind. The EU member countries will be increasingly populated by older people. Our project investigates theoretically and quantitatively how ageing affects their health and productivity. Using models of endogenous economic growth we assess how the feedback effects of ageing on investment and education affect long-run economic growth, competitiveness, and welfare of the EU member countries. With multi-country models we analyze how ageing influences human capital formation and migration flows in Europe. Using models of optimal retirement decisions we investigate how ageing impacts on the contribution and employability of older workers and how this feeds back to issues of intergenerational solidarity. With models of endogenous R&D we explore how ageing interacts with technological progress and assess how ageing will affect the EU's capacity to innovate and to develop. We investigate how ageing interacts with health demand and supply and how this feeds back to the macroeconomy. We assess whether the EU's market economies and public sectors provide too much or too little health care.
