Psychological consequences of migration

The psychological consequences of migration do not only apply to migrants but also to family members staying in the sending context or members of the host population who work or are in contact with migrants. This is especially the case for migrants who have experienced traumatic events prior to or during their migration trajectory. The process of incorporation into a host society also entails a psychological dimension, often labelled acculturative stress.

Studies listed under this topic include literature on migrants and/or refugees and trauma, PTSD, psychological consequences of deportation and repatriation, psychological consequences of immigration policies, the mental health of professionals working with refugees, and the relationship between mental health and integration.

Dynamics of Mental Health of Migrants

Principal investigator Hannes Kröger (Principal Investigator), Ana Nanette Tibubos (Principal Investigator)
Description

Adaptation and assessment of a common element treatment protocol designed to improve mental health in forcibly displaced populations

Principal investigator Haley Carroll (Principal Investigator)
Description
The relationship between migration and mental health is complex given the heterogeneous and context specific nature of migration and, generally speaking, forcibly displaced populations are at increased risk for developing mental health disorders. Yet, despite the recent Venezuelan forced displacement being the greatest diaspora in the recorded history of Latin America, little is known about the mental health effects and potential treatment targets for this at risk, stigmatized, and underserved population. In order to address a significant lack of mental health care seeking and retention in this population, the current multi-disciplinary study proposes a comprehensive examination of factors that serve as facilitators and barriers to mental health treatment seeking and treatment retention in forcibly displaced populations, which will then be leveraged to adapt and pilot an evidence-based treatment approach to increase retention of Venezuelan migrants in care.

Migration and Mental Health in Germany - A Representative Study on Risks and Helpful Factors

Principal investigator Jutta Lindert (Principal Investigator)
Description
A representative cross-sectional study in five German cities aims to examine mental health and risk and protective factors of different groups of migrants. The focus of the preliminary studies will be on the feasibility and practicability of the planned investigation. This might alert the research team to problems in collecting representative data on immigrants' mental health. The team will adapt and fine-tune the methods, especially the sampling method, if necessary. Additionally, the researchers will validate the instruments, the questions for the guided interviews and for the in-depth interviews, in accordance with an emic understanding of topics, concepts and language use.
