Janine Pinkow-Läpple is a postdoctoral researcher at IAMO in Halle (Saale), Germany. Her research focuses on migration and development. She is particularly interested in how migration contributes to the transmission of ideas and practices (“intangible remittances”) and how this can stimulate social change in countries of origin. Her regional focus is on Southeast Europe, especially on the region’s rural areas. Methodologically, she primarily works with qualitative and mixed methods approaches. In 2025, she completed her doctorate at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Her dissertation examined how female returnees in Kosovo and Romania transmit ideas and practices that contribute to social change in their origin contexts. A particular focus of her work was on migration-induced transformation processes of gender norms. She has contributed to several migration-related research projects, including the project “Transnational Families, Farms and Firms: Migrant Entrepreneurs in Kosovo and Serbia Since the 1960s” (TRAFFF). In addition, she has worked as a consultant for the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), contributing to initiatives promoting rural development in Southeast Europe. Prior to her doctorate, she studied Politics and Public Administration at the University of Konstanz as well as Peace Research and International Politics at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen.
