Health-related migration

Health-related migration is the migration process revolving primarily around a given health condition or disability, whether aiming for better treatment conditions, or for carrying a lifestyle in a more (disability) friendly environment. Research in this category includes studies on older age migration, healthcare, living conditions, disability and accessibility. Some research refers to the intersections between health issues and class, race, gender and sexuality.

Migration of Indian health professionals to selected European nations : the case of Denmark, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden

Authors Ayona BHATTACHARJEE
Description
India’s comparative advantage in health care is due to a large resource pool and competence in English. Indian migration to the US, UK or Australia has been widely studied, but not much attention has been given to the Scandinavian countries. This paper fills the gap by analysing recent trends and prospects for Indian health professionals in Denmark, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden. It combines available data sources, personal communication with different migration boards, interview of two international recruiters and a migrant health professional. Additionally, it looks at Indian R&D tie ups in the sector with these countries, which have implications for the movement of health professionals.

Coordinating resources to assess and improve health status of migrants from Latin America

Description
European health systems are committed to meeting the challenge of understanding the needs of migrant populations and adapting their services to meet these needs. The difficulties inextricably linked to this challenge are caused by the complexity of migration patterns and the differences between migrant population across EU countries. At present, the limited available data show that attempts to incorporate migrants’ health needs, in particular those of migrants from non-EU countries, into EU health systems have remained scattered and uncoordinated. COHEMI’s general objective is to coordinate referral centres dealing with specific Latin American (LA) diseases in order to provide a clear understanding of the full migration cycle in relation with the health systems in Europe and Latin America and to provide a in-depth insight into priority health-related aspects of LA migration in order to facilitate the development of and transfer of evidence and information relevant to migrant health policies.
