TIMING FERTILIY- A Comparative Analysis of Time Constructions and the Social Practice of Egg-Freezing in Germany and Israel

Description
'Technological advancements in reproductive medicine have introduced the new concept of 'FREEZING'. Nowadays, healthy women are given the possibility to cryopreserve their oocytes in order to prolong their fertility, a procedure known as 'social egg freezing'. There is an ongoing bioethical academic and public debate on the social and ethical implications of this practice. The here proposed socio-empirical research is interested in extending our understanding of the concept of 'freezing' in broader contexts, while analyzing it through the prism of 'sociology of time'. Egg freezing constitutes an extremely fascinating paradigm for studying concepts of time, timing, planning and its social-technological manipulation related to modern life science. In line with the IF work program's focus on creativity, innovation and diversity, this research aims to examine the interplay of culture and bioethics in an interdisciplinary and empirical manner, focusing on and comparing experts' and lay positions and using a cross-cultural German-Israeli comparative research framework. This cross-cultural comparison is especially interesting since the German regulatory and legal framework regarding new reproductive technologies is rather restrictive, while the Israeli regulation has been identified as extremely permissive. Using qualitative in depth interviews with relevant experts as well as users of social egg freeing, this research aims at (a) In-depth empirical analysis of time in the context of reproductive medicine; (b) A cross sectional analysis of social egg freezing by comparing two national contexts as well as experts and ordinary (lay) ethics; and (c) Theorization of the time dimension for the relationship of reproduction, labor and gender. Thus, this innovative research is expected to enhance the researcher academic competence and the transfer of new knowledge.'

"Conceptually new, multi-scale solutions to industrial flow problems."

Description
'Efficient use of energy and suppression of environmental pollution due to harmful emissions and noise (e.g. from aircraft near urban areas) are of paramount importance for sustainable development. New techniques are urgently needed for process intensification, reduced fuel consumption, pollution and noise. The central aim of this proposal is to address some of these problems by applying a new class of multi-scale turbulent flows that have a unique feature: they can be specifically designed for efficiency enhancement in many applications. Research in the past 10 years has demonstrated the power of these flows for process intensification, mixing enhancement, noise suppression and increased lift to drag ratios for wings of a given surface area. Many different industrial sectors such as the mixing, aeronautical, automotive, power generation and wind engineering industries can benefit from this work. Seven private companies operating in these sectors are associate partners in the proposal. Application examples include new static and dynamic mixers, silent spoilers, new efficient blades and wings suitable for aeronautical, racing car and wind energy applications, improved heat exchangers suitable for process or nuclear industries etc. In this IDP, we place particular emphasis on the quality of the training and learning experience of the early career researchers (13 in total) who will take part: we have put together an extensive training programme of 32 sets of lectures from academic and industrial partners and all researchers/engineers will be seconded to one or more academic or industrial institutions. The training includes a wide panoply of experimental and computational tools of the broadest applicability. We see this programme as the beginning of an activity with much larger scope to bring multi-scale bespoke flow concepts from the academic lab to industry together with the engineers who will have the technical background to help industry produce innovative products.'

Transformation of Family Norms in a Transnational World: How LGBT Migrants can Affect Change through Social Remittances

Description
The present study examines transformations of family norms through cross-border exposure to different family models. It focuses on the LGBT migrants from selected Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries with a constitutional same-sex marriage ban, but who now live in same-sex families in Belgium, one of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption. This case study will explore how intercultural contact can improve reception of an institutional innovation such as same-sex family. This project is based on in-depth interviews with two groups sustaining ties across borders: (1) the CEE gays and lesbians in same-sex marriage or raising children with a same-sex partner in Belgium, and (2) their non-migrant family members, friends and neighbours in home communities. Migrant transnationalism scholars have established that migrants can effect change in their home communities not only by sending remittances, but also by transferring ideas and practices (social remittances). But empirical investigations of this phenomenon are still scarce, and typically focus on democratic ideas and practices. In a novel approach, the present study will analyse social remittances by examining cross-cultural effects of the institutional innovation of same-sex family, and it will further position its findings into the wider framework of social change analysis. In light of the European Parliament's recent decision to include LGBT and same-sex families' rights into the new EU gender equality strategy, the study's conclusions will also inform relevant policy strategies. By developing this study at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre on Families and Sexualities at the UCL, the project will benefit from Centre's multidisciplinary perspective and expertise in transnational migrations, family norms and sexuality, to which the project will add a new perspective on the LGBT migrants from CEE, thus deepening Centre's focus on LGBT studies and widening their regional expertise.
