Draagvlak Migratiebeleid

Authors Research and Documentation Centre, Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, Tom Postmes, Ernestine Gordijn, ...
Description

EASO Research Programme

Description
A key goal of the Research Programme is to develop an empirical model detailing the relative importance of the various key push and pull factors determining asylum-related migration for certain typical flows. The Programme will be broken down into four major areas: 1. Gaining an overview of existing relevant work (literature review) 2. Empirical work (including a large-scale social survey of asylum-seekers) 3. Constructing an empirical model of asylum-related migration 4. Developing tools for monitoring of relevant information sources

Britain and Algeria: Problems of Return

Authors George JOFFÉ
Description
Britain is not an obvious country to which Algerians migrate, although the crisis of the Algerian civil war in the 1990s was to make it an alternative to continental Europe, especially France. From 45 in 1991, asylum applications peaked in 1995 at 1,865 persons and then ran at a consistently high level up to 2002. They are now in steep decline. Return of Algerian asylum-seekers has not followed a similar pattern, however, and many Algerians in Britain are illegally here. In fact, they have ranged between 85 (1998) and 220 (2005) a year, with no figures being available for 1999 and 2000. The British government admits that the efficacy of its return policy has been very limited, although domestic pressure has led to a much more concerted effort to return failed asylum seekers in recent years. However, the bare statistics must be seen against the growth of British security policies since 2001 and particularly since 2005. Fears of terrorism in Britain linked to the Algerian community here have led to a disproportionate arrest rate amongst Algerians, particularly in the ricin trial, the indefinite detention of Algerians on suspicion of involvement in terrorism without trial, agreements about mutual extradition, memoranda of understanding over the return of Algerians allegedly involved in terrorist activities and much closer cooperation between British and Algerian security services. This securitisation process has made the return of Algerians to Algeria much more problematic and has brought into question the British government’s commitment to its obligations within the European Union.

IOM Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM)

Description
The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) system is tracking and monitoring internally displaced populations. It captures, processes and disseminates information in order to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of displaced populations, either on site (e.g. camps) or en route. It provides primary data and information at national and international level. DTM focuses on four main components: mobility tracking, flow monitoring, registration and surveys. As of November 2016, internal displacement data is provided for 23 countries. More countries are being added to the matrix as information becomes available. The data provided covers the number of displaced people, demographics, needs and conditions in their places of refuge. It also monitors movements such as returns and secondary displacement.

Interracial intimacy in Africa: Afro-European couples, cross cultural transactions, and social changes in Islamic Zanzibar

Description
The project “Interracial intimacy in Africa: Afro-European couples, cross cultural transactions and social changes in Islamic Zanzibar” (INTIMIZ), offers an innovative approach to the study of globalization. Built on a bibliography in anthropology, sociology and history, and a case-study in Zanzibar (Tanzania), the project examines the social and cultural dynamics that foster intimate relationships between European expatriates and Africans in contemporary Africa. The project will pursue three objectives: 1) To document European migration to Africa. 2) To analyze the experience of Afro-European intimacy in Zanzibar. At the micro level, I will focus on the dynamics of intimate transactions, whether economic, material or cultural. While the economic issue is currently at the heart of the anthropological understanding of interracial sexuality, little consideration is given neither to the role of love and desire in cross-cultural encounters, nor to the role of cultural transactions between partners. By paying particular attention to affects and symbolic transfers of knowledge, beliefs, values, skills, which characterize the course of intimate life, the project provides a unique view on socialization and on the role of intimacy in possibilities social ascent. 3) To investigate the changes in the local understanding of intimacy. At the macro level, the project will trace the global dynamics that transform conjugality, sexuality, love, and gender roles in the Muslim society of Zanzibar. The project will thus investigate the ways in which Islam informs sexual practices and ideologies of intimacy and gender, and how they are negotiated and transformed with the settlement of non-Muslim Europeans, and mixed marriages. At a societal level, by analysing how people of different racial and religious backgrounds do engage in relationships, INTIMIZ also constitutes an original and effective means to combat racist prejudice.
