The Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) system is tracking and monitoring internally displaced populations. It captures, processes and disseminates information in order to provide a better understanding of the movements and evolving needs of displaced populations, either on site (e.g. camps) or en route. It provides primary data and information at national and international level. DTM focuses on four main components: mobility tracking, flow monitoring, registration and surveys.
As of November 2016, internal displacement data is provided for 23 countries. More countries are being added to the matrix as information becomes available. The data provided covers the number of displaced people, demographics, needs and conditions in their places of refuge. It also monitors movements such as returns and secondary displacement.
