Bayesian Agent-based Population Studies: Transforming Simulation Models of Human Migration

Description
The aim of BAPS is to develop a ground-breaking simulation model of international migration, based on a population of intelligent, cognitive agents, their social networks and institutions, all interacting with one another. The project will transform the study of migration – one of the most uncertain population processes and a top-priority EU policy area – by offering a step change in the way it can be understood, predicted and managed. In this way, BAPS will effectively integrate behavioural and social theory with modelling. To develop micro-foundations for migration studies, model design will follow cutting-edge developments in demography, statistics, cognitive psychology and computer science. BAPS will also offer a pioneering environment for applying the findings in practice through a bespoke modelling language. Bayesian statistical principles will be used to design innovative computer experiments, and learn about modelling the simulated individuals and the way they make decisions. In BAPS, we will collate available information for migration models; build and test the simulations by applying experimental design principles to enhance our knowledge of migration processes; collect information on the underpinning decision-making mechanisms through psychological experiments; and design software for implementing Bayesian agent-based models in practice. The project will use various information sources to build models bottom-up, filling an important epistemological gap in demography. BAPS will be carried out by the Allianz European Demographer 2015, recognised as a leader in the field for methodological innovation, directing an interdisciplinary team with expertise in demography, agent-based models, statistical analysis of uncertainty, meta-cognition, and computer simulations. The project will open up exciting research possibilities beyond demography, and will generate both academic and practical impact, offering methodological advice for policy-relevant simulations.

Modeling Infectious Diseases in Dynamic Populations with Relocation and Refugeeism

Description
The main purpose of this project is to create a realistic agent-based model to simulate the spread of infectious diseases such as measles, influenza, etc. in European and neighboring countries with their possibly under-vaccinated refugee populations. The model will be built upon two large-scale modeling platforms Framework for Reconstructing Epidemic Dynamics (FRED) and the Global Epidemic and Mobility Model (GLEAM). First we will create and curate realistic synthetic populations including residents and refugees by using various data sources such as Integrated Public-Use Microdata (IPUMS), Synthetic Populations and Ecosystems of the World (SPEW) for resident populations and World Health Organization, nongovernmental organizations, and country governments for refugees and relocated populations. Our model, with its forecasting capability of outbreaks, will help policy makers to mitigate outbreaks by assessing possible intervention mechanisms such as better handling refugees, vaccinations, school/workplace closures, antivirals, and social distancing methods. This project with its planned training program will help the researcher to transfer his knowledge in network modeling and analysis into a new field of large-scale agent-based modeling and simulation in a new institution in Turkey where there is a great need for these methods in public health.

Ethnic/Cultural Conflicts and Patterns of Violence

Description
In most quantitative studies, ethnic conflict is treated as an event affecting an entire ethnic group. These studies fail to take into account large variations in the intensity of violence across group members, the group’s territory and over time. The key innovation of this project is to analyze how ethnic violence is organized within a group, and how its application develops over space and time. In doing so, the project relies on spatial agent-based simulation to develop spatial-temporal models of ethnic group mobilization, both in a national and a transnational setting. These models operate on real-world geographies and make it possible to incorporate findings from qualitative research, thus yielding a conceptually rich representation of reality. Furthermore, the project employs spatial-temporal statistics to test the impact of the determinants of violence on a larger set of cases. The conceptual innovation of disaggregating ethnic groups combined with these two novel methods improves our understanding of the how ethnic violence occurs. Ultimately, this will contribute to the development of better policies directed at the mitigation or prevention of violence. The fellow will work at PRIO, one of the premier peace and conflict research institutes in the world by publication record, specifically at the Centre for the Study of Civil War (CSCW) whichi is a designated national Centre of Excellence. PRIO's reputation with international organizations and governments as a source of research-based expertise regarding conflict resolution and peacebuilding ensures dissemination of the project's results to the policy community.

Discrimination Norms Enforced and Disrupted by Social Networks: A Research Program Using Simulation and Experiments

Description
Recognizable traits (gender, ethnicity, hair color) often provide a basis for negative discrimination, even if there is no statistical basis for differentiation. Still, people act differently towards persons with different traits, as if they had different qualities, for instance with regard to work efficiency. This leads to severe conflicts if discrimination provokes prejudice and stigmatizing that in practice mostly target asymmetrically members of one, disadvantaged category. The proposed research program enriches existing theories about the emergence and maintenance of discrimination by a new perspective: it aims to model mechanisms based on social network relations and incorporates them into the explanations. It tries to find answers under which structural configurations discrimination practices are likely to occur and under which network conditions they can be best avoided. For answering these questions, innovative methodologies will be used: agent-based simulation and experiments. These techniques have only been used to a limited extent targeting the problem of discrimination, but offer a huge potential to extend our limited insight into social mechanisms that maintain discrimination practices. With the help of these methods, the proposed research tries to delineate conditions under which an endogenous breakdown of negative discrimination is promoted by social networks. Particular attention will be devoted to cases of fierce intergroup opposition, in which network segregation is aligned with negative discrimination. Results are expected to help forming efficient policies for fighting discrimination and segregation. The practical objectives of the application are to further develop the skills of the applicant in applying these methods with a help of leading experts, and to embed the research program in a multi-disciplinary environment, where important contributions can be expected from sociologists, economists, computer scientists, and historians.

Identifying the Location and Extent of Populations Trapped by Environmental Change in the Mekong Delta: An Agent-Based Modelling Approach

Description
The UK Foresight Migration and Global Environmental Change Project recently concluded that migration is likely to be increasingly influenced by environmental change in the future through the impact of climate change on economic, social and political drivers. However, the range and complexity of the interactions between these drivers means that it will rarely be possible to distinguish individuals for whom environmental factors are the sole driver. In parallel, within debates about climate change adaptation there has been an emerging trend to position migration as an adaptation strategy to environmental shocks and stresses. However, migration is expensive, requiring a number of assets/capitals. This can result in some populations who experience the impacts of environmental change seeing a reduction in the very capital required to enable a move. Environmental change is therefore equally likely to make migration less possible as more probable. In the decades ahead, millions of people are thus likely to be unable to move away from locations in which they are extremely vulnerable to environmental change. To the international community, this ‘trapped’ population is likely to represent just as important a policy concern as those who do migrate. In determining the extent and location of these populations the non-ubiquity of migration within a community needs to be accounted for in order to separate those people who want to migrate but are unable to do so from those who are unwilling to migrate and instead choose to cope with livelihood stresses in alternative ways. This distinction requires a contextually driven analysis of the decision to migrate or stay. Such a focus on the migration decision is suited to an agent-based modelling approach which takes into account an individual’s intention to migrate, the influence of migration and non-migration behaviour of others and their perceived ability to migrate within a decision mediated by household and community-level factors.

Advanced Finite Element Modeling of Arterial Stent Placement Procedures

Description
Arterial stenting has become a very important and successful intervention in vascular surgery. One of the most common scenarios includes so-called stent grafts, which are usually composed of a special fabric and supported by a metal stent mesh. Such stent grafts are used in endovascular repair (EVAR) to support weak spots and localized bulges (aneurysms) in an artery being at risk of rupture, most commonly for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). The stent graft strengthens the weakened region of the arterial wall and excludes the AAA from blood flow and blood pressure. Over the last decade, an enormous thrust of research with regard to computational analysis of biomedical engineering problems in general, and with regard to hemodynamics, vascular mechanics and stent placement in particular has taken place. While significant progress has been made in all mentioned fields, computational analysis of stent placement using finite element methods (FEM) is still not predictive enough to give specific advice to vascular surgeons on how to optimally place the stent graft during EVAR. Instead, this decision is mostly based on the experience of the vascular surgeon. Risks of stent placement include a movement of the stent away from the desired location (migration), leaking of blood around stent grafts (endoleakage) and damage of the arterial wall caused by the stent itself. The main objective of the proposed research project is the development, implementation and validation of advanced FEM tools for stent placement simulation. The long-term vision is to be able to provide vascular surgeons with unprecedented predictive capabilities regarding the optimal choice of a patient-specific stent design (size, geometry, etc.) and stent positioning in order to safeguard against the risks mentioned above.

Joint Advanced Severe accidents Modelling and Integration for Na-cooled fast neutron reactors

Description
This project will support the ESNII (European Sustainable Nuclear Industrial Initiative) roadmap and the Strategic Research Agenda and the Deployment Strategy of SNETP (Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform) on the enhancement of Sodium-cooled Fast neutron Reactors (SFR) safety, especially towards a higher resistance to severe accidents. In the initiation phase of SFR core disruptive accidents, it is essential to investigate the impact of new core designs that may disperse core debris and minimize risks of core compaction. The available codes today have been developed in the 80’s. The objective is to develop a new European simulation code, ASTEC-Na, with improved physical models, accounting for results of recent LWR research, with modern software architecture and high flexibility to account for innovative reactor designs. It will be based on the ASTEC European code system, developed by IRSN and GRS for severe accidents in water-cooled reactors. This will allow to capitalize the state-of-the-art knowledge on SFR severe accidents. The code will evaluate the consequences of fuel pin failure conditions on materials relocation and primary system loads, and the source term produced by the migration inside the reactor of activated fission products and aerosols that may be released to the environment. The project will gather partners with strong experience on SFR safety and/or on ASTEC code. Specific SFR physical models will be developed, on the basis of outputs of the CP-ESFR FP7 project. After the elaboration of general specifications and of a validation matrix, the models will be developed, implemented into the code, validated vs. experiments (like past CABRI ones) and benchmarked with other codes. The further extension of ASTEC-Na to cover other parts of the SFR severe accidents (transition phase, fires) and to LFR will be investigated. An Education programme will include workshops as well as the secondment of young researchers in other organizations.

Cosserat phase field modelling and simulation of viscoplasticity induced grain boundary migration and recrystallisation in metallic polycrystals

Description
The microstructure evolution of metallic alloys undergoing thermomechanical loads involves strain hardening, dynamic recovery, recrystallisation and grain growth. Predicting such phenomena is crucial for the control and optimisation of the mechanical properties of final components. Phase field approaches are used to simulate the change in grain morphology, growth and coalescence induced by grain boundary and stored energies due to prior viscoplastic deformation. On the other hand, continuum crystal viscoplasticity theory is well-established for finite element simulations of the deformation of polycrystalline aggregates. Currently, phase field and crystal plasticity models are used separately or successively: the field of stored elastoplastic energy computed from the crystal plasticity model serves as the initial energy distribution in the phase field simulation of subsequent grain morphology evolution. The objective of the project is to strongly couple both approaches so as to simulate dynamic grain morphology evolution during deformation processes. Each theory, i.e. the phase field model and the continuum crystal plasticity approach, possesses an evolution equation for the crystal lattice orientation. An essential driving force for lattice rotation evolution is the orientation gradient, the lattice curvature, which is the primary constitutive variable of the Cosserat continuum theory. The Cosserat theory offers a unique way of reconciling both approaches. The results of finite element simulations based on this new theory will be compared to experimental results, namely lattice orientation maps and strain field measurements, available for aluminium and copper polycrystals. The proposed model is the missing link between the physical description of grain boundary motion and macroscopic recrystallisation models. Such a paradigm has not yet been proposed and will open new ways for the understanding of elementary recrystallisation mechanisms in polycrystals.

Numerical characterization and simulation of the complex physics underpinning the Safe handling of Liquefied Natural Gas

Description
The international commitment to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases has led to a dramatic increase in the use of natural gas (NG). This trend is expected to continue since NG is considered as a vital ally in the search for a sustainable energy future. As Europe is deficient in natural gas resource, the demands need to be met by growing import in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The capacity of LNG to yield large volume of gas (a ration of 600:1 at standard temperature and pressure) has made it an extremely important component of the NG industry but also necessitates high safety standards in its handling. This has led to renewed interest in LNG safety from the energy security and reliability standpoint. The proposed IDP will focus on the numerical characterization and simulation of the complex physics underpinning the safe handling of LNG. The specific objectives of the research include: • To characterize different LNG release scenarios and develop robust source term models; • To gain insight of the complex physics in LNG/fuel cascades and flammable cloud formation, and develop robust predictive tools; • To develop a robust model for accurate prediction of rollover. • To develop modelling strategies for assessing the environmental impact of large LNG spill by coupling micro scale dispersion models with mesoscale atmospheric models; and • To develop and validate LES based predictive tools for large LNG pool fires. The predictive tools to be developed will be validated using published data as well as proprietary data from the private sector Associated Partners, and used to conduct parametric studies as well as safety case studies based on realistic LNG terminal layout. Six ESRs will be trained through the collective effort of well established academic staff (including some world leading professors) across 4 departments at the host in association with 6 Associated Partners including 4 from the private sector.

Umweltwandel und menschliche Migration: Ein sozial-ökologischer Teufelskreis?

Principal investigator Kathleen Hermans (Principal Investigator)
