Nationalist State Transformation and Conflict

Description
Scholars studying contemporary conflict and development have increasingly turned to the historical roots of state formation. Going beyond Tilly’s classical theory of state formation, the NASTAC project creates a new theory of nationalist state transformation that will be evaluated with historical maps and archival data extracted through machine learning. While much has been written about state formation and nationalism, there is currently no empirically verified theory that shows how nationalism transformed and keeps transforming state internal and external properties, and how post-nationalist mechanisms counteract this influence. Without such a framework it is difficult to know under what conditions partition or power sharing should be used to pacify conflict-ridden multi-ethnic states. The project contains four work packages (WPs). WP1 will investigate whether state penetration and the evolution of the size and shapes of states have interacted with warfare according to Tilly’s expectations. WP2 will develop our theory of nationalist state transformation showing how nationalism affected internal state reach and how it triggered external change, such as secession, unification and irredentism, and, in turn, how these processes interacted with, and modified, patterns of conflict. WP3 will apply the theory of nationalist state transformation to the post-1945 world and will analyze how it interacts with post-nationalist mechanisms, such as power sharing. WP4 will develop innovative methods that draw on recent advances in machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, in order to transform historical maps and documents into disaggregated and spatially explicit datasets with extensive historical scope. Led by Lars-Erik Cederman, the NASTAC project will be hosted by the International Conflict Research group at ETH Zürich, which has published extensively in top outlets and has ample experience in managing large research projects.

Russian Nationalism and the Ukraine Crisis: The Impact of Nationalist Actors on Russian Foreign Policy

Description
As nationalist sentiments are on the rise among broader Russian public, nationalist actors may exercise a more significant role in Russian politics. The main objectives of RUSNAT are: 1) to analyse the impact of the events in Ukraine on representative organizations of grassroots nationalism in Russia; 2)to analyse the ideologies of Russian nationalists and the Russian government with respect to the events in Ukraine;3)to develop a theoretical and conceptual framework appropriate for the analysis of the impact of Russian nationalists’ activism on the government’s foreign policy towards neighbouring countries with Russian populations, e.g. the Baltic states. They will be achieved through Discourse Analysis, Critical Discourse Analysis and close reading of primary sources generated by nationalists and representatives of Russian foreign policy from 2014 to 2016. I will construct a database covering nationalist frames, elite discourse (civic, ethnic, imperialist), and nationalist disruptive events. The influence of nationalists will be considered as positive if a nationalist frame is adopted by the elite discourse at a later date and if elite discourse changes after sudden disruption events organized by the nationalists. This research offers insight into the influence of nationalist actors on policy-making in post-communist societies; it helps assess the extent to which in non-democratic contexts foreign policy is driven by nationalist ideals in its initial phases; it contributes to our understanding of Russia’s relations with neighbouring countries with Russian populations and with the European Union as a geostrategic partner with whom Russia shares this neighbourhood; and, it will help us understand whether the growing influence of nationalist actors directly encourages the radicalization of Russian policies in near abroad. This is relevant for the design and implementation of EU policies regarding its Eastern neighbourhood and strategic partnership with Russia.

Report on citizenship law : Malaysia and Singapore

Authors Choo Chin LOW
Description
The Malaysian citizenship regime is shaped by British colonialism, federalism, the politics of communalism and ethnic nationalism. Ius soli has been controversial in Malayan citizenship history due to the immigration history of British Malaya. Birthright citizenship for many generations of immigrants was contested because they were not readily assimilated into the Malayan way of life, which challenged the ethnic homogeneity of Malay nation-states. The adoption of territorial birthright principles was contested in the post-war period due to the emergence of politics of communalism and ethnic nationalism. As ius soli has been controversial in Malayan citizenship history, the Federation of Malaya (1948) resorted to the principle of double ius soli, followed by the principle of delayed ius soli in 1952 before fully institutionalising unconditional ius soli on the eve of Malayan independence in 1957.

Political Violence Legitimization in Ireland and Cyprus

Description
'The goal of my project is to produce a book manuscript and, concomitantly, to advance my career through academic and other professional achievements related to the promotion of my research. The subject of my book manuscript is the legitimization of political violence. It analyzes how political violence is viewed by a variety of constituencies (recruits, victims, third parties, and other subdivisions) in the period when it occurs as well as in later years. I do this through a paired comparison of Ireland and Cyprus. The political violence at question took place in the 1910s and ‘20s in Ireland and in the 1950s, ‘60s, and 70s in Cyprus, which is to say, amidst processes of anti-colonial contention and of post-colonial state consolidation. The focus of my analysis, therefore, is the legitimization of these events of political violence during these periods as well as in retrospect, within contemporary collective and historical memory. Drawing from the literature on terrorism, nationalism, ethnic conflict, social movements, colonialism, and collective memory, my approach develops a nuanced conceptualization of legitimization. In general, I argue that the legitimization of political violence is situational, emerging out of many parallel processes that integrate representations of violence and collective commitments (nationalism, morality, historical narratives, strategic logics, etc).'
