World's Most Individual Bikes and e-bikes

Description
Despite the growing demand of bikes and e-bikes in urban European spaces, individualization, ergometric aspects, and parameters related to different types of usage (urban, race, mountain, etc.) are generally not taken into account in bikes mass production, which leads to physical problems, such as dorsal pain, joint pain and knee pain. Although these inconveniences can be excluded by purchasing individualized bikes and e-bikes, the high prices and long delivery times of custom-made bike builders (of up to several months) hold back many of potential users. Our concept with MI-BIKE is to offer 100% custom-made bikes produced by the principles of industrial mass production built on medical & orthopaedic parameters for optimal, comfortable and healthy use. For this purpose, we have developed (with the collaboration with medical and orthopaedic institutions) an algorithm which, via our online configurator, enables our customers to design their perfect bike, seeing the results in real time. With this project, our aim is to bring our custom-made wooden-framed bikes to the next level by making them electronic (e-bikes) and developing lightweight composite alternatives to our current wooden frames, creating MI BIKE, our lightweight bikes and e-bikes line. Moreover, through this project we aim to boost the competitiveness of our company, reaching overall revenues of about €19 million in the fifth year of commercialization, and increasing our personnel in about 5 people. With a Phase 2 investment of 1.2 million, this would imply a Return of Investment of 6.5

Bicycle Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) for Cycling Industry

Description
Nowadays more and more efforts are made to make the road traffic safer. Not just for the cars and trucks, but also for the motorbikes. The European Commission passed a legislation in 2012 that made the fitment of ABS for all new motorcycles above 125cc to be mandatory from 1 January 2016. This clearly demonstrates the trend that two wheeled vehicles must follow. The importance of reliable and effective breaking is also important for bicycles and electronic bikes (e-bikes) whose popularity is constantly growing filling the gap between motorcycles and pedal bikes. We are VIDRASOFT a spin-off company of University of Pannonia established in 2002, specialized in automotive electronics, automotive mechatronics and automotive informatics. To reflect this trend in 2 wheeled transport safety we have developed a game changing hydraulic type anti-lock braking system (ABS) for bicycle applications and have protected it with a patent. The functionality of the prototype system has been verified on several real road surface conditions (such as dry and wet asphalt, gravel and dirt roads) in a relevant environment (TRL6). This clearly demonstrates that we are ready for commercialization. Regarding the market size, over 191 Million pedal bikes produced a year world-wide and it is estimated that by 2018 the global e-bike sales will be close to 50 Million. This clearly demonstrates that the market is huge. Based on our pre-feasibility market findings we are initially targeting race and premium segment of pedal bikes as well as e-bikes. According to our initial business projection we estimate at least 3.9 M€ profit in 5 year time after market entry.

MOdel based coNtrol framework for Site-wide OptmizatiON of data-intensive processes

Description
The MONSOON vision is to provide Process Industries with dependable tools to help achieving improvements in the efficient use and re-use of raw resources and energy. MONSOON aims at establishing a data-driven methodology supporting the exploitation of optimization potentials by applying multi-scale model based predictive controls in production processes. MONSOON features harmonized site-wide dynamic models and builds upon the concept of the cross-sectorial data lab, a collaborative environment where high amounts of data from multiple sites are collected and processed in a scalable way. The data lab enables multidisciplinary collaboration of experts allowing teams to jointly model, develop and evaluate distributed controls in rapid and cost-effective way. Hybrid simulation and seamless integration techniques are adopted for rapid prototyping and deployment in real conditions. MONSOON will be developed and evaluated in two sites from the aluminium and plastics domains. The aluminium scenario will be focused on predictive monitoring of potlines, targeting early detection of anomalies and identification of potential optimization gains. Aluminium cases will be implemented in the plant with the highest primary aluminium production in the EU-28, namely the AP Dunkerque smelter, France. The plastics scenario will focus on fusing data from data-intensive in-mould sensors with information from higher SCADA levels, enabling early and precise identification of potential issues. This use case will be implemented in the GLN plant in Maceira-Leiria. MONSOON addresses the SPIRE vision, providing advantages for the European industry competitiveness and sustainability through the realization of an overarching monitoring and control infrastructure. MONSOON aims at creating synergies within and between the process industry sectors, boosting European industry in the worldwide race for competitiveness and sustainability.

Simulation tool development for a composite manufacturing process default prediction integrated into a quality control system

Description
Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) involves moderate pressure resin injection of a dry preform placed in sealed rigid tooling. Fast and effective processing requires correct placement of the reinforcement to avoid defects and potential race tracking, appropriate selection of inlet and outlet locations, and careful control of flow speeds to minimise porosity and dry regions; furthermore, suitable cure conditions are needed to avoid under-cure, or exothermic effects that generate excessive residual stresses and final part distortions. Today, finite element simulation is regularly used to design injection processes and cure. However, purely predictive simulation suffers from issues related to uncertainty and variability in material state and numerous process variables. Online monitoring of resin flow in tests and stochastic simulations to understand effects of material and model variability on flow processes could be two methods to enhance fidelity of numerical simulation models. The proposed project integrates three approaches to provide a unified integrated simulation tool combining predictive modelling, variability propagation and process monitoring. Input utilises material data and models to be developed with physical resin sensor results, from which process outcomes, conditional on material and process variables, are determined. The proposed work develops this concept for the three stages of RTM processing; namely, preforming, injection and cure. The overall concept will be implemented on a pilot RTM line and then transferred to the Topic Manager’s manufacturing site, where it will be used for trials. The project combines two universities with specialist knowledge in fabric mechanical and permeability modelling, resin test and modelling and numerical simulation of RTM processes and final part distortion. One industrial partner collaborates on industrial RTM and flow monitoring.

Advanced Program Analysis Using Declarative Languages

Description
Analyzing programs automatically is an activity in the heart of Computer Science research. Program analysis is fundamentally very hard, as most involved analyses are either undecidable (i.e., mathematically impossible) or intractable (i.e., requiring an astronomically long time to complete). As a result, analyses have high complexity due to their need to achieve efficiency. We propose to implement advanced program analysis algorithms using purely declarative specifications. Such declarative specifications are much easier and more succinct than typical implementations of program analyses, since they concentrate on what the analysis needs to compute and not on how it does so. In our past work we have shown that declarative specifications of points-to analyses not only are easy to define, but also admit aggressive optimization. As a result of our optimization methodology, our work has demonstrated very large (often more than 10x) performance improvements compared to traditional imperative or semi-declarative implementations of points-to analyses. In the proposed work, we plan to employ similar declarative specifications for higher-level analyses than mere points-to analysis and to languages with different features and characteristics. Specifically, we intend to declaratively specify program analyses that are necessary for security (e.g., information leakage analyses), for error detection (e.g., race or deadlock detection in multi-threaded programs), and for optimization (e.g., cast check removal). We also plan to explore languages such as JavaScript (which has strong functional features) in addition to more standard languages like Java. With this work the applicant will transfer his expertise in program analysis to the host institution. Additionally, the proposed work will reintegrate in Europe an applicant with substantial academic experience at multiple US institutions, directly enhancing European scientific excellence.
