Spirits of Displacement and Diaspora

Description
Spirit possession cults puzzle Western observers, particularly when they appear in supposedly secular urban environments. Muslim migrants from North Africa, seeking to establish new lives in Southern Europe, have to negotiate the continuity of such ritual practices with the constraints and expectations imposed on them by their new social contexts. But the legitimacy of these cults is contested also in their homeland, where they face increasing pressures by religious fundamentalism. Space and its organization, especially in urban settings, play an important part in these disputes. In Morocco, spirits are thought to reside in particular places, such as tombs, sanctuaries, or street corners. How do possession cults continue to be practiced when spirits’ spaces of residence have to be abandoned or undergo demolition? This research compares the continuities and ruptures in cult performances as the spaces that host them are affected by both forced displacement and voluntary diasporic migration. I will observe the resettlement of a slum in Casablanca, and compare it with two Southern European neighborhoods where Moroccan practitioners of spirit cults struggle to maintain their specific version of Islam in multicultural, post-colonial and post-secular urban settings, exposed to disruptive processes such as gentrification. By applying an ethnographic methodology to comparative urbanism, I aim to shed light on how different spatial transformations affect ritual performances that are meant to protect communities from social disintegration. I argue that different urban policies on both sides of the Mediterranean mutually reinforce, resulting in an overall transformation of cultural practices in transnational communities. Examining how migrants adapt localized ritual practices such as spirit possession cults to increasingly transient urban settings, furthers our understanding of the spatial and cultural dimensions that enable or prevent integration.

RESTORE: REsearch into implementation STrategies to support patients of different ORigins and language background in a variety of European primary care settings

Description
This project is concerned with optimising the delivery of primary healthcare to European citizens who are migrants who experience language and cultural barriers in host countries. We focus on the implementation of evidence-based health information (e.g. guidelines to enhance communication in cross-cultural consultations) and interventions (e.g. training initiatives on interculturalism and the use of paid interpreters) designed to address language and cultural barriers in primary care settings. We explore how these are translated (or not) into routine practice in primary care settings. We will investigate and support implementation processes for these using a unique combination of contemporary social theory, the Normalisation Process Theory and a participatory research methodology. Our five study objectives are to determine: What guidelines and/or training initiatives are currently available in our partner countries that have been generated by primary care research in a way that was inclusive of all key stakeholders? How are the guidelines and/or training initiatives translated into practice by primary care staff? What are the processes of implementation, ‘on the ground’ in routine practice? What is the capacity of primary care settings in different countries (and, therefore, different organisational contexts) to incorporate implementation processes within their current organisational arrangement? Is the implementation work for guidelines and/or training initiatives sustainable - leading to normalised use of these technologies in routine practice? What are the benefits (if any) of using NPT and PLA to investigate and support implementation processes? There will be co-operation between an inter-disciplinary team of experienced researchers, across 6 European health care settings with different organizational contexts and capacities to respond to this implementation work.

Numerical characterization and simulation of the complex physics underpinning the Safe handling of Liquefied Natural Gas

Description
The international commitment to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases has led to a dramatic increase in the use of natural gas (NG). This trend is expected to continue since NG is considered as a vital ally in the search for a sustainable energy future. As Europe is deficient in natural gas resource, the demands need to be met by growing import in the form of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The capacity of LNG to yield large volume of gas (a ration of 600:1 at standard temperature and pressure) has made it an extremely important component of the NG industry but also necessitates high safety standards in its handling. This has led to renewed interest in LNG safety from the energy security and reliability standpoint. The proposed IDP will focus on the numerical characterization and simulation of the complex physics underpinning the safe handling of LNG. The specific objectives of the research include: • To characterize different LNG release scenarios and develop robust source term models; • To gain insight of the complex physics in LNG/fuel cascades and flammable cloud formation, and develop robust predictive tools; • To develop a robust model for accurate prediction of rollover. • To develop modelling strategies for assessing the environmental impact of large LNG spill by coupling micro scale dispersion models with mesoscale atmospheric models; and • To develop and validate LES based predictive tools for large LNG pool fires. The predictive tools to be developed will be validated using published data as well as proprietary data from the private sector Associated Partners, and used to conduct parametric studies as well as safety case studies based on realistic LNG terminal layout. Six ESRs will be trained through the collective effort of well established academic staff (including some world leading professors) across 4 departments at the host in association with 6 Associated Partners including 4 from the private sector.

Biomedical Imaging & Informatics – European Research and Training Initiative

Description
'Current research in Biomedical Imaging & Informatics (BI&I) is driven by the interaction of the natural sciences, informatics & engineering, and medicine. Education and training of early stage researchers (ESR) is, however, often still centred within only one of these domains, resulting in researchers often neither acquiring necessary knowledge of clinical needs, nor sufficient understanding of disciplines beyond BI&I. Furthermore, ESR working in BI&I still face a ‘cultural gap’ between natural sciences and informatics & engineering with the natural sciences achieving innovation by basic research and informatics & engineering approaching this through technological applications. However, the traditional separation into disciplines and cultures breaks up once the researcher is faced with biomedical questions. An interdisciplinary education, solid knowledge of areas adjacent to the core research field, as well as business competences are therefore the keys to successful, innovative research and excellent science. The proposed IDP BERTI aims to meet all these new requirements. BERTI will establish an interdisciplinary and intersectoral European network of computer scientists, natural scientists, engineers, clinicians, and partners from industry, hence meeting the objectives of the EU Innovation Union “to attract and train young people to become researchers and offer internationally competitive research careers to keep them in Europe and attract the best from abroad.” Each ESR will be assigned one academic, one medical supervisor, as well as a mentor from our industry partner GE Global Research, ensuring perfect training for both an academic and industry career. Due to the truly interdisciplinary nature of BERTI, we feel that an evaluation on a solely natural science/engineering basis will not suffice to grasp the full extent of BERTI. Therefore, we kindly ask that the life science and medical aspects of our proposal be given due attention during the evaluation process.'

PRESCHOOL EXECUTIVE FUNCTIONS ACROSS CULTURAL CONTEXTS

Description
Executive functioning (EF) refers to a set of cognitive skills (working memory, inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility) that control self-regulatory functions which organize and direct all cognitive activities, emotional responses and overt behavior. EF regulatory control plays a fundamental role in the intellectual and socio-emotional functioning of children. The current study aims at evaluating the cultural invariance of EF structure in three cultural settings and investigating the relative contribution of socio-cultural factors (home environment, parenting styles and SES) and biomedical factors (i.e. birth weights, stress levels and nutritional status) in shaping these abilities. This project has two studies. Study one aims at validating both the EF construct and measures of EF in three cultural contexts (UK, Indonesia and Kenya). A systematic culturally decentered approach is taken during tool development to ensure cross-cultural validity. Tool development follows a three staged approach which combines extensive ethnographic work with standard psychometric procedures. Study two examines the factors that are associated with EF abilities in the three countries. In each of the countries, 100 children aged 48-60 months will be tested, using the instruments developed/adapted in the first study. Advanced statistical analysis including multigroup path analytic procedures will be used to describe factors that influence executive functioning at preschool. The cross-cultural variation is vital for estimating the environmental influence of EF development. The project has both theoretical and practical implications. Describing the structure of EF and factors that influence their development should contribute to refinement of theories, diagnosis of executive deficits and identifying salient points of intervention.
