Social Cohesion and Diaspora Politics

Authors Jonathan LAURENCE
Description
Faced with difficulties with the operation of their newly established Islam Councils, European governments are increasingly open to the involvement of erstwhile sending states in the social and religious lives of immigrant diasporas in Europe. This is especially visible in the provision of externally-funded religion services (imams and mosques) in the absence of viable domestic alternatives. This paper considers the British debate on social cohesion and offers some context and offers background on recent diaspora outreach from Morocco and Turkey. The sending states are natural partners of Europeans during the current phase of institution-building, and European governments have tried to channel these foreign influences to encourage the institutional integration of their Muslim minorities without ceding sovereignty over European citizens.

Ethnic Diversity and Social Cohesion in Germany

Principal investigator Bram Lancee (Principal Investigator)
Description
"After more than half a century of mass immigration to Europe, the consequences of increasing ethnic diversity in Europe are far from clear. More specifically, one of the prominent questions on today’s research agenda is how ethnic diversity affects social cohesion and attitudes towards immigrants. This project aims to contribute to answering this question. Recently, ample attention has been paid to the relation between ethnic diversity and social cohesion in the neighbourhood. Putnam (2007), for example, claims that in the short run, immigration and ethnic diversity tend to reduce solidarity and social capital. Several scholars report that ethnic diversity affects social cohesion (Lancee & Dronkers 2011; Letki 2008; Tolsma, Van der Meer & Gesthuizen 2009; Putnam 2007; Gijsberts, van der Meer & Dagevos 2011; Alesina & La Ferrara 2000)and attitudes towards immigrants (Schlueter & Scheepers 2010; Pettigrew & Tropp 2006). To date, little longitudinal research has been done on the relation between ethnic diversity and social cohesion in Germany. The objective of this project is to carry out longitudinal analyses with the German Socio-Economic Panel Survey (GSOEP) and neighbourhood data on the zip code level. In short, I will examine the relation between neighbourhood diversity and indicators of social cohesion and attitudes toward immigration."

Social Cohesion, Identity and Religion in Europe, 400-1200

Description
The period between 400 and 1200 AD saw the emergence of new fundamental modes of identification in Europe. Firstly, strong religious identities took shape and became hegemonial over vast regions where Christian communities developed. And secondly, new kingdoms with ethnic denominations were formed, and the Roman empire gave way to a pluralistic political landscape. Most ethnic designations for medieval and modern states in fact go back to that period. Both processes, not least through their interaction, created new forms of social cohesion, but also of conflict, and had a deep impact on European history up to this day that has not been sufficiently understood yet. Universal religion and ethnic/national particularism have always been regarded as opposite principles. But that is only part of the picture, and the proposed project is intended to look systematically at the ways in which religious and ethnic identities interacted, both as forms of discourse and as social practices. In studying the Early Middle Ages, the project addresses a period that has been neglected in debates about ethnicity and the rise of the nation. By choosing a long-term perspective, it attempts to historicize ethnicity and religion. Specifically, the project will concentrate on the ways in which the Bible inspired new discourses of identity and ethnicity, and in which the formation of Christian communities could enhance ethnic and political cohesion. Important political, affective and cognitive resources for the political role of ethnicity in European history were created in Late Antiquity and the Early and High Middle Ages, c. 400–1200 AD. They provided a potential that could be used at different stages in European history, not least, in the development of the modern nation.

Asylum, refugees, and IDPS in Russia : challenges to social cohesion

Authors Vladimir MUKOMEL
Description
The resolution of problems for asylum seekers, refugees, and IDPs encounters resistance, due to the cautious attitude of Federal government authorities, state governments, local governments, and the host population. The prevalence of a xenophobic attitude, pressure of non-governmental organizations that work with asylum seekers, and the weakness of civil society institutions create a distorted picture of the unimportance of this contingent’s problems, and weakens the potential readiness of the government and society for emergency situations related to the flow of asylum-seekers

The radius of Generalized Trust among different educational groups: Are those 'most people' out-groups?

Description
European countries experience an increasing policy concern about migration’s impacts on social cohesion. Social cohesion is understood as ‘solidarity’ and ‘togetherness’, often measured by generalized trust. However, studies using think aloud data demonstrate that many respondents high in generalized trust think ‘most people’ refers to people they know, whereas a high proportion of those low in trust think about strangers. Thus this project starts by recognizing that generalized trust is not necessarily the same as lack of prejudiced feelings about out-groups and aims to return to the overlooked basics: the operationalization of generalized trust, which is allegedly in decline by ethnic diversity. Furthermore, this project aims to relate attitudes to implicit measures and behavior in a controlled setting, which is ignored in previous research. Failure to accurately map the relation between generalized and out-group trust may not only lead us to possibly overestimate or underestimate their incidence in different settings, but it also conceals clear public policy directions. The first two objective of this research are: to examine the measurement similarity between generalized and out-group trust among educational groups with the aid of think aloud data and invariance testing. The third objective is to experimentally assess how well these attitudes relate to less socially desirable measures, namely reaction time in associating out-groups and in-groups with (un)pleasant words and how far research participants choose to sit away from in-groups and out-groups as social distance. Results from this project will benefit governmental agencies and academics seeking to map social cohesion by providing better quality indicators. Furthermore, the EF will enable the candidate to further develop her position as a leading academic in political psychology. This project, finally, contributes to an overarching policy area of the EU in enhancing social inclusion and inclusive growth.

Governing Urban Diversity: Creating Social Cohesion, Social Mobility and Economic Performance in Today's Hyper-diversified Cities

Description
The central hypothesis of this project is that socio-economic, socio-demographic, ethnic and cultural diversity can positively affect social cohesion, economic performance and social mobility of individuals and groups. A better social cohesion, higher economic performance and increased chances for social mobility will make European cities more liveable and more competitive. In this period of long-term economic downturn (or sometimes even crisis) and increasing competition from countries elsewhere in the world (e.g. China, India), it is important to find out how and under which circumstances European's urban diversity can be turned into social and economic advantages. Many current urban policies lack a positive view on urban diversity, because they generally focus on the negative aspects of diversity, such as intolerance, racism, discrimination and insecurity. New policies, instruments and governance arrangements are needed, and sometimes they already exist. We have to find out how they have become successful and how they can be implemented elsewhere. When we acknowledge the hyper-diversity of our urban societies, we also have to acknowledge that these societies cannot flourish from standard or general approaches aiming at, for example, economic growth or better housing or more liveable neighbourhoods. Increasingly, more diverse, more tailored arrangements are needed, arrangements that have an eye for hyper-diverse cities and communities. As a result of the project, new and innovative policy instruments and governance arrangements will be suggested that (a) recognise urban diversity as a positive aspect; (b) increase interaction and communication between the diversity of groups in urban society; and (c) increase participation to satisfy the needs of the communities. The project thus aims at finding out how urban diversity influences three core issues: social cohesion, economic performance and social mobility and how governance arrangements help to strengthen this.

The project explores research and debates on multiculturalism, social cohesion and liberal values in academic discourse, policy documents and the media. It scrutinises discourses voicing anxiety over "multiculturalism" in societies marked by the erosion of citizenship, urban revolts among disadvantaged migrant youth, an ongoing nationalist-populist alignment and exclusivist policies of migration and "integration".

Where do I belong? The effects of uncertainty-identity on acculturation outcomes for migrants in Germany

Description
This research project will investigate multiple perspectives (migrant, host and intergenerational) on attitudes about integration, feelings of belongingness, group affiliation, and psychological and sociocultural adaptation of migrants. The proposed research project offers a new theoretical framework in which the bidirectional nature of the acculturation process is addressed. Acculturation theory and uncertainty-identity theory are integrated in order to investigate the possible consequences of uncertainty about oneself and belongingness. The main purpose is to understand (1) when and where conflicts and social tensions between host members and migrants as well as between generations arise, (2) why mal-adaptation of some proportions of migrants occur (e.g. identification with sub-groups to reduce uncertainty and oppose the host society), and (3) what intervening variables impact on positive outcomes (social cohesion, harmony). In three comprehensive studies, these key questions will be addressed. An advanced mixed-method approach will be employed to acknowledge different levels of analyses, namely the individual, regional and societal level. The proposed research will substantially contribute to the resolution of intercultural conflicts and the mechanism behind hostile attitudes. Moreover, it will be possible to explain the conflicts between hosts and migrants and offer ways of conflict resolution to build a more harmonious future. The findings will be very important and useful to equip host members and migrants as well as policy makers with the tools to work towards more positive outcomes and social cohesion.
