Agentes, brókers y otros negocios en viajes y migración.

Commercial actors in travel and migration are the private entities that facilitate and mediate migration. The specific characteristic of these actors is that their actions are based on financial rather than altruistic motives. Therefore, they request a remuneration for their services. This category of actors includes service providers such as travel agencies, labour recruitment agencies, visa brokers, marriage agencies, financial services firms, employers of transit migrants, pre-departure health assessment centers, language schools providing language certificates, au-pair or nanny agencies, student recruitment agencies etc. Intermediaries can be active in different fields of migration such as work migration, marriage migration or student mobility. It is difficult to draw a clear line between regular and irregular actors. While intermediaries usually act within the limits of the law, some actors find themselves in a semi-regular space, providing both regular and irregular services.

A SEMANTICALLY-ENHANCED MARKETPLACE OF INTEROPERABLE PLATFORM-AS-A-SERVICE OFFERINGS FOR THE DEPLOYMENT AND MIGRATION OF BUSINESS APPLICATIONS OF SMEs

Description
The 36-month PaaSport project focuses on resolving the application portability issues that exist in the Cloud PaaS market through a flexible and efficient deployment and migration approach. To this end, PaaSport will combine Cloud PaaS technologies with lightweight semantics in order to specify and deliver a thin, non-intrusive Cloud-broker (in the form of a Cloud PaaS Marketplace), to implement the enabling tools and technologies, and to deploy fully operational prototypes and large-scale demonstrators. PaaSport will enable European Cloud vendors (in particular SMEs) to roll out semantically interoperable PaaS offerings leveraging their competitive advantage and the quality of service delivered to their customers, making their offerings more appealing and improving their outreach to potential customers, particularly the pan-European software industry. PaaSport will also facilitate European Software SMEs to deploy business applications on the best-matching Cloud PaaS and to seamlessly migrate these applications on demand. Therefore, PaaSport contributes to aligning and interconnecting heterogeneous PaaS offerings, overcoming the vendor lock-in problem and lowering switching costs. From a business perspective, PaaSport aims at lifting the barriers that cause the vendor lock-in problem, thus empowering Cloud customers and Cloud application developers (in particular, European SME Software vendors) and allowing them to choose freely the Cloud PaaS offering that best fits their needs. PaaSport is also expected to empower the position and encourage the entrance of European SME Cloud vendors, such as Flexiant, in an emerging market which is currently dominated by American colossi, such as Google and Amazon. In order to maximize the communities awareness and adoption of the PaaSport results, the PaaSport partners (mainly the participating Software SME Associations) intend to design and implement a focused set of European-wide dissemination ac

Politics of difference: Child marriage and prestige consumption among the Romanian Gabor Roma – with a special focus on the post-socialist transformation

Description
The project focuses on the practices and ideologies of the politics of difference (in Ŕomani language: Ŕomani politika ‘Roma politics’) characteristic of the Gabor Roma living in Romania. Roma politics is a tournament of value serving to construct, represent and manipulate social and economic differences. The prestige relations between Gabor Roma individuals and families are primarily defined on the basis of the results achieved in the ethnicized, symbolic arenas of Roma politics. The project pays special attention to two of these symbolic arenas: prestige consumption and marriage politics based on child marriage. It reveals that in order to obtain a deeper and more context-sensitive understanding of the social relations and interactions in Roma groups it is necessary to simultaneously investigate the politics of difference and the ethics of sociability, and how they impact each other. One of the central questions of this multi-disciplinary research is how the post-socialist transformation has affected these symbolic arenas and the pre-revolution Gabor Roma concept of social success. Today, child marriage within Roma groups is a social problem found throughout Europe. (See the statement of the European Parliament published in March 2013: http://www.plan-eu.org/pressrelease/european-parliament-turns-spotlight-tackling-child-marriage/). Since Gabor Roma—referring to their own cultural autonomy—insist on child marriage, which is prohibited under EU regulations, a complex conflict of law and value has evolved. The research—which can be defined as a type of cultural brokerage—can significantly contribute to a detailed understanding of this symbolic conflict between Roma customary law and EU laws, as well as possible solutions. In this way, the research findings will be useful not only for anthropologists, but also for European policy-makers concerned with the regulation of marriage and the protection of women and children’s rights in the European Union.
