Religion and diasporas : challenges of the emigration countries

Authors Jocelyne CESARI
Description
Using the theoretical framework of transnational studies and sociology of religion, this paper identifies the most significant factors that influence the religious dimensions of the emigration countries: the majority or minority status of the migrant group in the receiving countries as well as the pre-existing level of politicization of religion in the sending countries. It shows that the interactions of sending and receiving countries take place in religious terms in a broader transnational space including deterritorialized religious and political actors.

Perception of Eastern Religions in Europe

Description
The issues of globalisation, intercultural relations, migration crisis and ecological crisis are among the most challenging problems that Europe is currently facing. In their core lies the issue of identity-otherness dual. The present project attempts to address these problems in an innovative way seeking to understand whether the current situation in Europe leads to transformation of the dominant European worldview and whether and how Eastern religions influence this process. Therefore, the aim of the project is to investigate the contemporary interrelation between Europe and Eastern religions. The project combines study in the fields of comparative philosophy and religion, as well as philosophy, sociology and anthropology of religion. It has three major objectives: (1) a research objective, (2) an educational dissemination objective and (3) career advancement objective. The general research objective is to write a book with a working title “Eastern religions in Europe” investigating why and how Eastern religions penetrate and exist within the European worldview and society. The educational dissemination objective is to contribute to development of a tolerant attitude to otherness. Enrichment and extension of research, teaching and organisational skills and abilities of the researcher through the proposed research and training will contribute to her professional development, career advancement (full professorship) and development of new BA and MA courses at home University on religious and cultural interconnections between East and West.

Hybride europäisch-muslimische Identitätsmodelle

Principal investigator Naika Foroutan (Principal Investigator)
Description

Muslim Antisemitism in Colonial Morocco

Description
European colonialism in Muslim societies represented a turning point for the powerful European influence that was widespread throughout the Middle East. With European Jews acquisition of land in Palestine, Arab nationalism started to incorporate antisemitic ideology into their texts and discourses. The creation of the Jewish state in 1948 accelerated this process. Thus, paradoxically, while the presence of antisemitism among European societies has been marginal since the end of World War II, socially and politically discredited, and even prosecuted, antisemitic voices have gained ground in the Middle East. With the immigration of the North African populations (both Jewish and Muslim) from the second half of the twentieth century, some conflicts have arisen in Europe as well, particularly, but not exclusively, in France. Therefore, the colonial period is crucial to understanding not only when, how and why European antisemitism entered northern Africa, and later returned to Europe, but above all how it interacted with the local notions and prejudices about Jews in Muslim societies. Further research is required to analyse in detail what the integration of a foreign ideology means and involves for native popular ideas and local prejudices. In this research project, the researcher will address these issues through historical anthropology and ethnography in the context of inter-religious relations in Spanish Colonial Morocco.

East-Asian Buddhism in Post-Apartheid South Africa

Description
Explorations of Buddhism in Africa are very few and have been so far conducted at the introductory level. Moreover, in the field of religious studies there is still a marked tendency to reduce the globalization of Buddhism to its worldwide missionary activities, and to neglect crucial factors such as the impact of deterritorialization and hybridization. BUDDHISMAFRICA aims to break new ground in this field of research by approaching these dynamics from an interdisciplinary perspective at the intersection of religious studies, sociology, anthropology, media studies, African studies, East Asian studies, gender studies, and global studies, as to provide for the first time a comprehensive and detailed analysis of East Asian Buddhism in South Africa, with a focus in the post-apartheid period (1994-present). BUDDHISMAFRICA has three research objectives, which will be pursued through ethnographic (participant observation, in-depth interviews) and archival research: 1) To analyze the trajectory of East Asian Buddhism in South Africa and its hybridization at the organizational/individual level. 2) To investigate the degree in which East Asian Buddhism has been able to reach out to black people, and to provide them with maps to navigate race and cultural identity. 3) To clarify the impact of informal spiritualities related to East Asian Buddhism on the South African religious context. BUDDHISMAFRICA will disseminate the research findings through peer-reviewed open-access publications (two articles and one monograph), an international workshop (and the publication of its proceedings), public talks for non-specialists, and project updates through the traditional/social media. Moreover, BUDDHISMAFRICA has put in place a detailed training program that is aimed, in collaboration with the supervisor/internal advisors and through the participation in dedicated workshops, to develop the applicant’s interdisciplinary, research management, teaching, and interview skills.
