A note on Syrian refugees in the Gulf : attempting to assess data and policies

Authors Françoise DE BEL-AIR
Description
As the migrant crisis escalates at Europe’s borders, the Gulf States have been blamed for having offered “zero resettlement” to Syrian refugees. In response to these statements, some Gulf States claim that they have actually relaxed their entry and residency laws to accommodate sizeable numbers of Syrian nationals since the start of the conflict. The paper assesses these claims using statistics available from these countries, as well as declarations from official bodies released in the local press. It appears that, besides being major aid donors to Arab countries sheltering Syrian refugees, most Gulf States have passed various measures destined to facilitate the entry and stay of Syrians since 2011.

"The Jagiellonians: Dynasty, Identity and Memory in Central Europe"

Description
'This ERC Starter Grant project will fund an interdisciplinary, transnational and groundbreaking study of the Jagiellonian dynasty (c.1386-1596) and its role, and legacy, in the development of identity in what we now call Central Europe. One of the most spectacularly successful of early modern dynasties, comparable only to the Habsburgs, in 1500 the Jagiellonians ruled a third of continental Europe, an area comprising no fewer than 14 present-day states. Uniquely among European dynasties in this period, the Jagiellonians created a dynastic regional hegemony, a geographical ‘bloc’ of neighbouring monarchies. Our knowledge of the Jagiellonians is, however, limited and highly fragmented along both national and disciplinary lines. The project will provide the first treatment of this leading Renaissance-era dynasty as a supra-national entity; it will offer a major new investigation of Renaissance dynasty itself as a political and cultural institution; explore the part played by the Jagiellonians in the evolution of pre-modern local or 'national' and regional identities, and investigate the ways in which divergent memories of their rule have, from 1596 onwards, shaped modern national identities in Central Europe. The project will transcend scholarly divisions – between disciplines (e.g. art history, anthropology, political history), between period specialisations (late medieval, early modern, modern) and between individual national historiographies (Polish, German, Czech etc.), to offer a metahistory of the meanings attributed to this landmark European dynasty, from the founder Jogaila (d.1434) to Radek Sikorski, Poland’s current foreign minister. The research will be undertaken by a multi-lingual team of 5 post-doctoral researchers, led by the PI, drawing on a range of written and visual sources produced by and about the Jagiellonians over six centuries.'

Of Awful Connections, East German Primitives and the New Black Berlin Wall: Germany and German History in African American Literature, 1892-2016

Description
Darryl Pinckney’s “Black Deutschland” (2016), Paul Beatty’s “Slumberland” (2008), and John A. Williams’ “Clifford’s Blues” (1999) are three recent novels by African American authors and with African American protagonists that are partly set in Germany and that include references to events of German history such as the Holocaust and German Reunification. The research action will take these three novels as points of departure for an investigation that combines an accurate analysis of the images and functions of Germany and German history in African American literature with a transnational, comparative perspective. Drawing on a theoretical framework that connects comparative imagology, black diaspora studies, and the recent academic focus on world literature's “multidirectional memory” and its “cosmopolitan style”, the project will analyze four historically diverse, cross-cultural discourses that have shaped the role of Germany and German history in African American literature: 1) the formation of a ‘canonic’ African American image of postromantic Wilhelminian Germany that can be traced back to Du Bois’ time as a student in Berlin (1892-94); 2) the interwar period and its intertwining sub-discourses of the Old World as “racial haven” for African Americans, and of Berlin as “European capital of sexual libertinage”; 3) National Socialism and its relations and parallels to racism in the U.S.; 4) African American perceptions of Germany as a divided and/or reunified country. The project is based at two institutions in Berlin: the interdisciplinary Zentrum für Literatur- and Kulturforschung (ZfL), where the applicant will be part of the research area on world literature, and the Kennedy Institute for North American Studies at the FU Berlin, where a secondment will take place. The project's location in the German capital, which is in itself a major topic of the research action, will be a connecting factor for numerous networking, dissemination and communication activities.

On the Frontiers of Peace. Cross-cultural Peacebuilding on the Global Frontiers of the Iberian Empires (1500-1580)

Description
This research project investigates the historical roots of cross-cultural peacebuilding. European expansion during the sixteenth century was characterised by a high degree of violence, which was fuelled by cultural differences and religious radicalisms. The meeting of different cultures created new forms of violence, but, at the same time, generated new forms of cross-cultural encounters that were driven to construct a lasting peace. This project explains the transition from the violent conflicts of the first encounters between Europeans and non-European peoples, to their peaceful coexistence. Rather than focusing on cross-cultural diplomacy or treaty-making, this research project explains how peace was constructed “on the ground”. In order to do so, it focuses on three different frontiers of the first global empires. Through a comparative survey that includes cases from the Mediterranean, the Americas and Asia, this project shows that frontier societies resulting from European expansion created a new means of constructing peace in scenarios where religious and cultural differences hindered peaceful coexistence. Drawing on a wide array of sources, this research project pays special attention to three main questions: How were forged the cross-cultural social networks that came to be the backbone of peaceful relations forged? How did the exchange of goods influence peacebuilding processes in different parts of the world? And, how did the multicultural social fabric of these frontier societies develop the necessary tools in order to avoid conflicts? This historical enquiry into the global roots of cross-cultural peacebuilding will broaden our understanding on the conditions needed to establish a peaceful coexistence among different cultures. In so doing, this project deals with current societal challenges such as the establishing and maintaining social relations and order between different socio-religious cultures, as well as the fight against violent radicalisation.
