Creativity Across Cultures

Description
'Creativity is a crucial topic in most areas of human life and has been recognized as a key driver of European development by the European Parliament. Whereas individual differences in creativity have been studied, cultural differences and the role of culture in creativity are largely unknown. This is surprising given the growing importance of globalization and multi-national organizations. The proposed project addresses this research need investigating cultural influences on creativity in three innovative studies. It is hypothesized, that different aspects of creativity will be fostered in different cultures and that culture can have inhibiting and facilitative influences on creativity. The project will be a mutually beneficial collaboration and synergy between the applicant’s strength in cross-cultural psychology and the expertise in creativity of scientists at the host institution from the departments of statistics, applied computer science, and psychology, as well as the expertise of international artists funded by Bavarian state fellowships. The objective of the first proposed study is to document cultural differences in creativity in five countries and to test a new theoretical model specifying the relationship between culture and creativity. The objective of the second study is to further investigate cultural differences in creative analogical reasoning in a complex problem situation, since creativity has often been studied empirically in relatively simple situations. The objective of the third study is to investigate within-cultural differences focusing on creativity in famous experts of visual arts, literature, music, and design. The proposed research addresses the theoretical need to investigate cultural influences on creativity, and has implications for individuals and international teams. Identifying which cultural factors can predict creativity and which ones limit creativity can help create an environment conducive for creative thinking and working.'

The evolution of cultural norms in real world settings

Description
An intense debate is raging within evolutionary anthropology as to whether the evolution of human behaviour is driven by selection pressure on the individual or on the group. Until recently there was consensus amongst evolutionary biologists and evolutionary anthropologists that natural selection caused behaviours to evolve that benefit the individual or close kin. However the idea that cultural behaviours that favour the group can evolve, even at the expense of individual well-being, is now being supported by some evolutionary anthropologists and economists. Models of cultural group selection rely on patterns of cultural transmission that maintain differences between cultural groups, because either decisions are based on what most others in the group do, or non-conformists are punished in some way. If such biased transmission occurs, then humans may be following a unique evolutionary trajectory towards extreme sociality; such models potentially explain behaviours such as altruism towards non-relatives or limiting your reproductive rate. However, relevant empirical evidence from real world populations, concerning behaviour that potentially influences reproductive success, is almost entirely lacking. The projects proposed here are designed to help fill that gap. In micro-evolutionary studies we will seek evidence for the patterns cultural transmission or social learning that enable cultural group selection to act, and ask how these processes depend on properties of the community, and thus how robust are they to the demographic and societal changes that accompany modernisation. These include studies of the spread of modern contraception through communities; and studies of punishment of selfish players in economic games. In macro-evolutionary studies, we will use phylogenetic cross-cultural comparative methods to show how different cultural traits change over the long term, and ask whether social or ecological variables are driving that cultural change.

Globalised governance norms and local management and business practices in Africa and on the Arab peninsula

Description
'MANAGLOBAL will explore the type of local management approaches that are practiced in selected African and Arab countries. It will explain how companies and subsidiaries become profitable and grow in emerging countries in order to highlight the gap between globalized norms and standards of management and the ordinary ways of locally doing business. These processes of adaption are considered as glocalisation or hybridization. MANAGLOBAL will show how hybrid and innovative forms of private companies' government can be shaped by the mobility of people, capital, goods and knowledge. It will also demonstrate that local business practices (so called 'poor' governance, and 'insufficient' managerial skills) may become economic opportunities. Our aim is to contribute to research on management through the development of a pioneering collaborative team of 16 African, Arab and European partners, from 8 countries, including researchers, business leaders, and institutional decision-makers. We will confronte 3 methodologies: - A collaborative empirical research applying similar research approaches in all participating countries. - The study of the background, education and careers of business managers of industrial and commercial enterprises of selected countries. - The collection of ethnographic data and the production of business-related and organization-based case studies Based on the results, MANAGLOBAL will develop a cutting-edge empirically evidenced theoretical framework on how business is conducted and organizations are managed in African and Arab countries. Moreover, the training of the next generation of managers of the region is planned via online courses and workshops. A strong training program and 340 months of secondments will assure an efficient and strong knowledge exchange, increasing skills on doing cross-cultural research on how business is conducted and organizations are locally and globally managed, and the career development of all the participants.'

Global Encounters between China and Europe: Trade Networks, Consumption and Cultural Exchanges in Macau and Marseille (1680-1840)

Description
In the last decade the approaches of the global history have been emphasized in order to visualize the progress, form and method which historians have undertaken when carrying out ambitious research projects to analyse and compare diverse geographical and cultural areas of Asia and Europe. But when dealing with comparisons and cross-cultural studies in Europe and Asia, some scholarly works have exceeded of ambiguities when defining geographical units as well as chronology. In this project I examine perceptions and dialogues between China and Europe by analysing strategic geopolitical sites which fostered commerce, consumption and socioeconomic networks between China and Europe through a particular case study: Macau, connecting with South China, and Marseille in Mediterranean Europe. How did foreign merchant networks and trans-national communities of Macau and Marseille operate during the eighteenth century and contribute to somehow transfer respectively European and Chinese socio-cultural habits and forms in local population? What was the degree and channels of consumption of European goods in China and Chinese goods in Europe? These are the main questions to answer during my research to explore the bilateral Sino-European trade relations and how the trans-national dimension of exotic commodities changed tastes by creating a new type of global consumerism. Such concrete comparison can help to narrow the gap that some researchers have created when widely analysing differences between Asia and Europe without a specific geographical and chronological delineation. The major novelty of this project is based on the use of Chinese and European sources to study changes in consumer behaviour. The principal investigator of the project works in China which is and added value for the achievement of outstanding results. So the expected results will bring an obvious breakthrough by adding the specific part of the project in which each team member will work.
