In recent years, Member States have been encouraged to experiment with alternative legal pathways for people seeking protection. This experimentation and exchange of good practice has been facilitated by the UNHCR, European Commission (EASO), Global Refugee Sponsorship Initiative and both the Catholic and Protestant Churches. Research from Canada suggests that sponsorship arrivals receive greater long-term support for their integration outcomes when compared with resettled refugees. What does evidence from academia and civil society show has been the integration experiences and outcomes of these diverse new arrivals compared to spontaneous and resettlement arrivals in Europe?
