I am a Lecturer in Political Science at the University of Amsterdam, specialising in Islamic political thought, liberal theory, and Islamophobia studies. My research examines the compatibility between Islamic orthodoxy and political liberalism, arguing in my monograph Compatibility of Islamic Doctrines with Political Liberalism—now part of the postgraduate curriculum at the University of Oxford—that observant Muslims can, through principled theological and juridical interpretation, endorse the normative foundations of a liberal state; a formal review of the book has been commissioned by the Oxford Journal of Islamic Studies. Alongside this theoretical work, I make policy-relevant contributions in the EU-funded EXFILES Project (Deliverable D.2.4, 2023), I analysed the ethical and legitimacy implications of law-enforcement surveillance and racial profiling of Muslims, bridging normative political theory with concrete governance challenges.
