The primary task of the project implemented by the Institute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic was to conduct a questionnaire-based survey (with 1,000 respondents) which would gather quantitative information on the incomes and expenses of immigrants currently living in the Czech Republic, as well as the remittances they send abroad. Volunteering for Refugees in Europe: Civil Society, Solidarity, and Forced Migration along the Balkan Route amid the Failure of the Common European Asylum System

Principal investigator J. Olaf Kleist (Principal Investigator), Serhat Karakayalı (Principal Investigator)
Description
Amid rising numbers of asylum seekers arriving in the EU and migrating along the Balkan route in 2015, state, EU and traditional NGO institutions failed to adequately receive, register and care for the new arrivals. Instead, volunteers stepped in to provide humanitarian assistance. They are locals as well as citizens from other European countries who engage with the crisis for a variety of reasons, in a range of contexts and with varying consequences. This research project will examine personal motives, social structures and political conditions of volunteering for refugees in countries along the so-called Balkan route: in Greece, in Slovenia, and in former Yugoslav countries. Based on political process tracing, sociological-ethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews with volunteers, officials, locals and refugees we will devise country reports that will create the basis for a comparative study. Thus, we will interrogate whether we can witness in this refugee policies ’from below’ the creation of a particular, pro-immigration and human rights based European civil society or social movement.

NO TO HATE SPEECH IN OUR MEDIA: Sharing Best Practices to counter hate speeches about migrants, ethnic and religious minorities in the European media

Description
The project aims to directly strengthen the capacity of 154 European media and about 1300 journalists in 8 countries (Spain, Greece, Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Hungary, Ireland and Austria) in the fight against hate speech through the creation and adoption by these media of a European Code of Ethics for good conduct in the handling of information on the migration process and on ethnic and religious minorities in Europe. The methodology for developing this Code of Ethics is based on the creation of the Guide for Journalists on Roma People, a project carried out by EMARTV in 2012-2014 in Spain, which constitutes the best practice of reference of the project. In addition, the purpose of the intervention is to raise awareness of migration and ethnic and religious minorities in Europe, and to provide information on ways to combat hate speech through a European radio campaign in 7 countries. , 154 radio stations for more than 5 million listeners and through the creation of an interactive online map of good practices in the field of Communication and Integration of Migrant and Minority Populations, an innovative tool already tested in Spain.
