Research-policy relations

Research-policy relations, also known as   knowledge-governance relations refer to all aspects of the interaction between migration research and policy making. This includes research on knowledge production for the sake of policy development, how knowledge is used in policy processes, and how relations between researchers, knowledge brokers, and policy actors are structured, both formally and informally.

Studies listed under this topic include literature on research-policy dialogues, cross-national differences in research-policy relations, migration policy analyses, and knowledge utilisation studies.

Focusing on various European countries, as well as on the EU and local levels, , it aims to reconstruct how science-society dialogues on these contested topics have evolved and how these dialogues have shaped the understanding of migration and integration. The DIAMINT cluster was awarded the status of Standing Committee in the IMISCOE Research Network in 2014. Before, DIAMINT led an international comparative research project on Science-Society Dialogues on Migrant Integration, funded by the VolkswagenStiftung. APPROACH The DIAMINT cluster connects literatures of policy sciences, science studies and migration studies. Knowledge production in the field of migrant integration research. Dialogue structures, or the various institutionalized or non-institutionalized ways in which science-society dialogues are configured Knowledge utilization in the fields of migrant integration policymaking, politics and civil society.

The project has the goal of extend the knowledge of the causes and consequences of international migration with particular focus on themes like temporary migration, migrants’ integration, and migration policies. The IAB has been in charge of building a macro-dataset on international migration to 20 OECD destination countries by gender, country of origin and educational level, for the years 1980-2010 (5 years intervals). European Smart Citizens as Decision Makers Rather Than Data Providers

Authors Nicola Delvino, Michael Keith, Igor Calzada
Description
On November 14th 2016 the Urban Transformations programme, funded by the ESRC, kicked off the first knowledge exchange activity[1] by bringing together academics and practitioners in the research/policy field of urban transformations from all over Europe. This workshop was the first of a series entitled Bridging European Urban Transformations that has been established in partnership between the Urban Transformations programme led by the University of Oxford at COMPAS and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), particularly with the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies. In this post-Brexit era, commitment and willingness to cooperate seems more important than ever before. Therefore, the workshop series, which runs from November 2016 to October 2017, emphasises the value of connections between institutions and key players in the field of urban transformations in the UK and in the rest of Europe

CROSS-MIGRATION: Current European and Cross-National Comparative Research and Research Actions on Migration

Principal investigator ()
Description
Migration and the characteristics which constitute its parameters, dynamics and complexities comprises one of the most paramount matters in contemporary Europe. Under these designated circumstances, the necessity of relevant, concise, and useful knowledge are prerequisites for the design of efficient and constructive policies. Although particular databases such as EUROSTAT and OECD offer valuable insights into these migratory dynamics, a comprehensive, efficient and integrative database which synthesizes, categorizes and maps out the vast analytical accounts on migration throughout Europe is non-existent. This project, bringing together 16 leading research institutions, networks and policy institutes throughout Europe, aims to proficiently fulfill this gap crucial for policy-purposes through the construction of a central migration hub. This hub will be of instrumental value due to its capability to operate as a key grammar in the design of current and future policy. Essentially, it accumulates and consolidates past, present and future migration research through providing an extensive yet succinct overview of migration drivers, infrastructures, flows, and policies, allowing for an improved systematic understanding of the factors that constitute the interaction between these analytical categories. The accessibility, accumulation and integration of research in one hub will be an integral element for improved policy making as it concentrates and visualizes relevant data – thereby facilitating information acquisition in pursuance of policy oriented goals. As of such, a continuous research-policy dialogue is prevalent throughout the construction of the hub, an insight which enables its users to visualize and develop migration scenarios- entailing a classification system for migration research. Consequently, the project aims to shape a strategic research agenda on migration as it will identify gaps, overlaps and connections within the available stock of migration research

Description
In recent years, different regional governments have raised their voices to highlight the need to reinforce their role in the search for substantive measures towards a clear and coherent common asylum policy, that takes up the voices of the actors at different levels of government. As a result, the main objective of this contribution is to examine the actions that have been undertaken in the regions represented in the European Committee of the Regions of two Member States -Spain and Germany- with the aim of answering the research questions: What have been the main initiatives to manage asylum in the different regions of Germany and Spain? Do variables such as the ideology of regional governments, wealth, unemployment and the number of applications influence on the commitment to the reception and integration of asylum seekers? To identify, among other aspects, that despite the barriers imposed from the state level, there are more regional governments that have undertaken solidarity actions.
