Becoming A Minority

Description
In the last forty years, researchers in the Field of Migration and Ethnic Studies looked at the integration of migrants and their descendants. Concepts, methodological tools and theoretical frameworks have been developed to measure and predict integration outcomes both across different ethnic groups and in comparison with people of native descent. But are we also looking into the actual integration of the receiving group of native ‘white’ descent in city contexts where they have become a numerical minority themselves? In cities like Amsterdam, now only one in three youngsters under age fifteen is of native descent. This situation, referred to as a majority-minority context, is a new phenomenon in Western Europe and it presents itself as one of the most important societal and psychological transformations of our time. I argue that the field of migration and ethnic studies is stagnating because of the one-sided focus on migrants and their children. This is even more urgent given the increased ant-immigrant vote. These pressing scientific and societal reasons pushed me to develop the project BAM (Becoming A Minority). The project will be executed in three harbor cities, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Malmö, and three service sector cities, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Vienna. BAM consists of 5 subprojects: (1) A meta-analysis of secondary data on people of native ‘white’ descent in the six research sites; (2) A newly developed survey for the target group; (3) An analysis of critical circumstances of encounter that trigger either positive or rather negative responses to increased ethnic diversity (4) Experimental diversity labs to test under which circumstances people will change their attitudes or their actions towards increased ethnic diversity; (5) The formulation of a new theory of integration that includes the changed position of the group of native ‘white’ descent as an important actor.

The Integration of the Second Generation

Principal investigator Maurice Crul (Principal Investigator), Jens Schneider (Principal Investigator), Maren Wilmes (Principal Investigator), Inken Sürig (Principal Investigator)
Description

Career Choices for Young People with Immigrant Background - Transitions, Strategies and Orientations in Education and Work

Principal investigator Catarina Lundqvist (REMESO Project Leader), Aleksandra Ålund (Scientifically Responsible), Erik Olsson (Participants not from REMESO)
Description
This project focuses on career-choices of youth with immigrant background. It explores questions of exclusion and inclusion, the importance of of social and cultural capital for school performance. It records reflections on career-paths in a Swedish and transnational perspective. The main result of the project is a PhD thesis on Ethnic Studies focusing on young persons' career-choices, their strategies and orientations and their reflections on these choices. The central research question of the thesis is how young persons with foreign background make their choices relating to education or work. Which are the ambitions, conceptions and visions of these young people? On the background of which influences, conditions, limitations and opportunities do they make their choices? The study reflects on youth's own understandings of their choices, agency and motives. Methods employed are individual and focus group interviews with youth in secondary school combined with participant observation in secondary schools in Stockholm. Teachers and other staff are also interviewed.

Dilemmas of representation and solidarity: Trade unions and extreme right-wing parties

Principal investigator Anders Neergaard (REMESO Project Leader)
Description
Research on trade unions has identified the crises and challenges trade unions face, not only in relation to employers and the state, but also regarding how to keep the trade union and workers together. One particular challenge is how to build solidarity in a context in which the number of migrant workers is increasing and working class support for anti-immigrant extreme right parties is growing. The research question framing this proposal is how an important organisation for Swedish industrial relations negotiate what seems to be a fundamental contradiction among its members. The aim is to analyse the strategies and actions taken by trade unions in relation to migrant workers, ethnic diversity and members and activists displaying support for extreme right parties. The theoretical framework is drawn from labour studies and industrial relations research along with migration and ethnic studies, supplemented with gender studies.. Methodologically, the project is an ethnographic study of five blue collar trade unions and Landsorganisationen, employing semi-structured interviews and participant observation, complemented with document analysis.

Interplay of European, National and Regional Identities: nations between states along the new eastern borders of the European Union

Description
The proposed research project is aimed at an in-depth understanding of the ways in which the modern European identities and regional cultures are formed and inter-communicated in the Eastern part of the European continent. The project is an inter-disciplinary effort (sociology, political science, history, ethnography). Its methodological thrust is empirical and comparative; new data complementing prioritiess will be generated. On top of that, the project pursues the objective to verify and advance existing theoretical and methodological frameworks for ethnic studies as well studies of identities and nationalism. In order to account for the diversity encountered in the field and to adequately identify the main factors in the identity formation process, ethnic groups, which are part of larger titular nations and are divided by the new European frontier toward the New Independent States are studied. Altogether, 8-10 million people have been affected by politically set boundaries. The project clusters based on major themes such as “Formation and interplay of identities and ethnic cultures in Europe”, “Nations between states”, “Self-governance, representation and citizenship”, “Historical memory and dynamic trajectories of the development of ethnic minorities in Eastern Europe”. Project assumes a detailed study of a sample of 10 ethnic minorities in EE by the means of a series of quantitative and qualitative surveys focusing on the identities and values issues. Four regional workshops and a final conference will conclude the project.
